This selection of 2 Star Barri Gotic Hotels shows that you can still find great accomodation in a brilliant location in Barcelona without breaking the bank. All these hotels are highly recommended if you are visiting the Catalan capital on a budget but are also after a little class.
If you're a regular Barcelonas.com reader, you'll know that my preferred area for booking accommodation in Ciutat Vella is between Carrer Ferran and Plaça de Catalunya.
With the exception of Hostal Drassanes, which is close to the port, all these 2 Star establishments are ideally located in the safe but atmospheric part of the Barri Gòtic.
El Jardí, is near to the gorgeous Plaça del Pi, and all the rest of the hotels are located on sidestreets close to the top and central sections of La Rambla.
Carrer Santa Ana, Carrer Portaferrisa, Carrer Boqueria and Carrer Ferran are all off to your left as you walk down La Rambla from Plaça Catalunya and couldn't be better situated for exploring the Gothic Quarter.
The location is also great for getting around the city as both Catalunya and Liceo metro stations are extremely close.
Apart from El Jardí, the hotels are listed starting at the top of the Ramblas near Plaça de Catalunya and working down to the port.
All of them look pretty good but I'd guess the middle ones on Carrer de la Boqueria and Carrer Ferran would be a little noiser but are perfect if you want to be right in the thick of things.
Plaça Sant Josep Oriol, 1, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona
As far as I'm concerned, El Jardí is the clear favourite in this selection of 2 Star Barri Gòtic Hotels - brilliant location, loads of history, it's got a garden and I've heard great reports of the service!
Located on the corner of the gorgeous Plaça del Pi and Plaça Sant Josep Oriol, El Jardi is in the heart of Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter.
The lovely El Jardí, which means garden in Catalan, first opened as a hotel in 1860, and became popular with artists, who still exhibit in the nearby square.
Despite being quite simply furnished, El Jardí retains much of its original charm and many of its historic features.
All of the air-conditioned rooms include a safe and TV, and most have a private balcony overlooking the square.
There is a free Wi-Fi hotspot in the lobby area and plent of cafés and bars nearby.
Carrer Santa Ana, 25, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona
The location on Carrer Santa Ana is excellent and although it's only got two stars 2 Star Barri Gotic Hotels, Hotel Cortes is more than adequate for those travelling on a budget.
In fact, I walked past the other day and it looked really nice.
According to its publicity, it offers bright, air-conditioned rooms with free Wi-Fi, a TV and a private bathroom, but it's the location that's the winner.
Just 2 minutes’ walk from the famous Ramblas and 400 metres from Barcelona Cathedral, the hotel is also very close to Catalunya metro station.
You should also visit the beautiful Gothic Santa Anna Church, which is just a couple of doors away and nobody knows about!
The Cortes also has a bar offering a daily breakfast and a lunchtime Menu del Dia and the 24-hour reception means guests can come and go at any time.
Carrer Santa Anna, 24, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona
This is the second of our 2 Star Barri Gotic Hotels located on Carrer Santa Anna just off the top section of The Ramblas, Hotel Catalunya is a little more hotel than hostel compared with the Cortes.
As usual, it offers free Wi-Fi and air-conditioned rooms with satellite TV.
All rooms at the Catalunya come with a fridge and a safe and the private bathroom is equipped with a hairdryer.
A nice but eccentric touch is that breakfast is served in a café opposite the hotel.
Carrer Portaferrisa, 23 - Principal, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona
This one's another of my favourites - great location with a touch of class!
Located on Carrer Portaferrisa just a few metres away from the lovely central section of The Ramblas known as La Rambla de les Flors, Hostal Rembrandt is perfectly situated for getting the best out of Barcelona.
Hostal Rembrandt offers a 24-hour reception and rooms with free Wi-Fi and guests have access to shared or private bathroom facilities.
Some rooms also feature French balconies overlooking bustling Carrer Portaferrisa itself and the beamed ceilings give this reasonably priced hostel a real touch of class.
Carrer Boqueria, 23, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona
Set on Carrer de la Boqueria just 50 metres from La Rambla, Liceu Metro Station and the famous Boqueria Market, Hotel Condal is right in the hub of what's happening whilst being far enough away from La Rambla to be fairly tranquil.
Carrer Boqueria is by far my favourite way of getting from The Ramblas to Plaça de Sant Jaume, by the way.
Apparently, the hotel was opened in 1850, and although the building is nothing special, the Condal’s rooms have simple décor with tiled floors and a TV.
Anyway, the Condal offers individual or double rooms with free Wi-Fi and private bathrooms and a continental breakfast is served in Hotel Condal’s café-bar.
Carrer Ferran, 31, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona
Hostal Fernando is located on the busy Carrer Ferran between La Rambla and the historic Plaça Sant Jaume, so it's also perfect for Plaça Reial.
I think it's ideal for the younger traveller on a budget, who wants to be in the thick of things.
It offers basic private air-conditioned rooms and shared dormitories with free Wi-Fi.
The rooms at the Hostal Fernando come with a TV, safe and a private bathroom and dormitories with private bathrooms are also available.
Fernando guest house has a simple restaurant and bar, and the 24-hour reception means you can be out late having fun and still get some shut-eye.
Carrer Ferrán, 21, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona
Located on busy Carrer Ferran, which runs between La Rambla and Plaça Sant Jaume, Hotel Adagio is perfect for exploring the Gothic Quarter and with Liceo Metro station so close, the rest of Barcelona too.
Much of what I said about Hostal Fernando is also valid for Hotel Adagio, but the Adagio is possibly a little more upmarket.
It offers air-conditioned rooms, many of which have a private balcony.
The 5-storey building dates from 1850 and was refurbished in 1992, so there is a lift - very important!
There's also a 24-hour reception and free Wi-Fi, so it's perfect for party people with a laptop.
Carrer Ample, 7, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona
I've left Hostal Drassanes until last because although it's in the Barri Gòtic neighbourhood, the section close to the port is a little different from the area near Plaça de Catalunya and the top of La Rambla.
The Drassanes is located 300 metres from the bottom section of La Rambla, and is perfectly placed for walks along the seafront as Port Vell Harbour is just 100 metres away.
Some rooms have views of La Mercè Church and the charming and historic Plaça de la Mercè, so it's in a prime location during Barcelona's main festival in September - Les Festes de la Mercè.
Hostal Drassanes offers free Wi-Fi, a 24-hour reception and bright, air-conditioned rooms with TVs and modern bathrooms.
Each simple room has tiled floors and a safe, and free hairdryers are available from reception, so the accommodation is basic but adequate.
