These 2 Star Raval Hotels offer reasonably priced accommodation close to Barcelona City Centre and I have grouped them in three zones.
The first group of hotels are set right in the heart of El Raval with all that this entails in terms of noise and security late at night.
They are worth checking out, though, because you really can find some extraordinary accommodation bargains in this part of the neighbourhood.
The second group of hotels on and around Carrer Hospital, Carrer Jerusalem and Carrer Sant Pau are my personal first choice because you here you combine the slightly seedy atmosphere of El Raval combined with a great location just off La Rambla between Liceo and Catalunya Metro Stations.
I really love this area behind La Boqueria Market - there are some great bars and restaurants, the beautiful medieval Hospital de la Santa Creu and you get to experience Barcelona at its eccentric best.
I also quite fancy the two 2 Star Raval hotels at the Universitat end of Carrer Pelai - there's a completely different atmosphere here and it doesn't really feel like El Raval but personally I love the space and light of Plaça de la Universitat.
Carrer Joaquin Costa, 40, Ciutat Vella, 08001 Barcelona
Located on Joaquin Costa between Plaça de la Universitat and the MACBA Contemporary Art Museum, Acta BCN 40 Hotel is in the heart of El Raval which means it may be a bit dodgy late at night.
However, Universitat Metro station is very just a short walk away and the neighbourhood has a good choice of shops and bars.
Hotel Acta BCN 40 offers small modern, air-conditioned rooms with flat-screen satellite TVs and guests can enjoy a varied buffet breakfast in the hotel’s stylish breakfast room.
To sum up, Hotel Acta is not only cheap and cheerful but also extremely well-situated.
Carrer Valldonzella, 5, Ciutat Vella, 08001 Barcelona
Located on Carrer Valldonzella half way between La Rambla and Plaça de la Universitat, Husa Meson Castilla is well situated at the top end of El Raval where the streets are safer and not so noisy.
This refurbished hotel offers free Wi-Fi and also has a very pleasant garden terrace where guests can have breakfast.
Rooms at the Meson Castilla include ornate beds, and some have a private balcony.
If you're looking for budget accommodation that's convenient for the city centre, the Meson Castilla looks an excellent option.
Carrer Sant Vicenç, 39, Ciutat Vella, 08001 Barcelona
Set on Carrer Sant Vicenç just off Ronda de Sant Antoni, Hostal Radio offers a decent location at very reasonable prices.
Sant Antoni and Universitat Metro Stations are both fairly close but La Rambla and Plaça Catalunya are a bit of a walk away.
Hostal Radio offers a 24-hour reception and colourful rooms with a flat-screen TV, heating, a ceiling fan and a private bathroom.
I actually really like the Sant Antoni neighbourhood, which is definitely worth exploring whether you decide to stay at Hostal Radio or not.
Carrer Sant Pau, 20, Ciutat Vella, 08001 Barcelona
Set on Carrer de Sant Pau just a few metres from La Rambla and Liceu Metro Station, which is on the Green L3 Metro Line, Hostal Operaramblas is magnificently situated for the price.
The Operaramblas’ heated rooms offers simple décor with tiled floors with a telephone, free Wi-Fi but no TV.
The guest house has a drinks machine and sells snacks in the reception where you'll also find a computer with internet access.
Carrer de Sant Pau itself also has plenty of cheap bars so finding somewhere to eat and drink definitely wont be a problem.
Carrer Hospital, 36, Ciutat Vella, 08001 Barcelona
I really like the atmosphere along Carrer Hospital so Hostal Ramos definitely gets a thumbs up for location.
This is one of the 2 Star Raval Hotels offering 24-hour reception and simple, air-conditioned rooms with a TV, private balcony and private bathroom.
Hostal Ramos has a computer with free internet access and there is also a luggage storage facility in reception.
The hostel is just a short walk from La Rambla, the Boqueria Market and Liceo Metro station so is a really great combination of price and location.
Carrer Jerusalem, 30, Ciutat Vella, 08001 Barcelona
Located on Carrer Jerusalem which runs between Carrer Hospital and Carrer Carme, Hostal La Palmera is located just behind La Boqueria so once again La Rambla and Liceo Metro are very close.
La Palmera offers bright rooms with a balcony, a free Wi-Fi zone, 24-hour reception and a daily continental breakfast, featuring coffee, juices, fruit and pastries.
Bathrooms are shared or private and there is also a small TV lounge so Hostal La Palmera satisfies all the needs of the budget traveller.
Carrer Pelai, 1, Ciutat Vella, 08001 Barcelona
HLG City Park Pelayo is set in an impressive historic building at the Universitat end of Carrer Pelai so it's very close to the Metro Station, which is on the Red L1 Metro Line and the Purple L2 Metro Line.
The Universitat neighbourhood is very pleasant and you're only 5 minutes’ walk from Plaça Catalunya and La Rambla.
Furthermore, you are also right on the edge of the slightly more upmarket Eixample District.
The City Park Pelayo offers bright, air-conditioned rooms with wooden floors, a safe, a minibar and free Wi-Fi and the hotel provides a buffet breakfast each morning.
Carrer Pelai, 6, Ciutat Vella, 08001 Barcelona
Situated a little further along Carrer Pelai, Hotel Marvi is slightly closer to Plaça Catalunya but still in the Universitat neighbourhood.
The Marvi offers spacious rooms with a digital TV, free safe and en suite bathroom with full bathtub and air-conditioning.
The hotel serves a complimentary breakfast in the bright breakfast room, which is a definite plus at a budget hotel, and looks like a very good accommodation choice to me.
Carrer Pelai, 62, Ciutat Vella, 08001 Barcelona
Located on Carrer Pelai on the corner of Plaça Catalunya and La Rambla, Hotel Medium Monegal is set right in the heart of things.
This is one of the 2 Star Raval Hotels that offers good-value rooms with free Wi-Fi, satellite TV and air conditioning which are on the small side.
According to the reviews, the breakfast isn't up to much but given that this is a budget hotel in a truly unbeatable location, this really should be the least of your considerations.
