This selection of 3 Star Barcelona City Centre Hotels are all slap bang in the middle of the Catalan capital right next to either Catalunya or Urquinaona Metro Stations.
Only one of the hotels listed here is on Plaça de Catalunya itself but all the rest are within 200 metres or so, which can fairly be described as Barcelona City Centre.
I've organised these hotels in a kind of circuit beginning with H10 Catalunya Plaza, which on the square in the Rambla de Catalunya corner.
We then take in Hotel Continental at the top of La Rambla, which was where George Orwell stayed with his wife during the Spanish Civil War.
Then comes my own personal my
favourite, Hotel Nouvel, which is on Carrer de Santa Anna just off Barcelona's
most famous street.
Hotel Denit is on one of the backstreets opposite Barcelona Cathedral and finally Room Mate Pau on Carrer Fontanella and Gran Ducat on Ronda de Sant Pere are both close to the El Corte Inglés side of Plaça de Catalunya.
Plaça Catalunya, 7, L'Eixample, 08002 Barcelona
Set in a refurbished 19th century building, H10 Catalunya Plaza is the only 3 Star Hotel actually located on Plaça de Catalunya itself.
From the look of the entrance and public areas, I have to say the modernisation has been done extremely tastefully very much in keeping with the Modernista style of the building and featuring original ornate tiles, murals and carved wooden doors with modern finishes.
The 46 air-conditioned rooms have rich brown wooden floors and are decorated in relaxing light shades.
Many have views of the square or feature a terrace and all feature a Nespresso coffee maker with 2 free capsules, an iPod docking station, a safe, minibar and free Wi-Fi.
The well-regarded 1892 Restaurant offers traditional Catalan cuisine with a Modernista ceiling and great views of the Plaça de Catalunya and there is also a lobby-bar, a library and business centre and a fabulous chill-out terrace.
For the price, the H10 Catalunya Plaza looks an excellent choice and would not be surprised if the hotel moves up to a 4 Star rating in the near future.
La Rambla, 138, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona
Brilliantly located just a few steps away from Plaça de Catalunya at the top of The Ramblas, Hotel Continental is famous as the place where George Orwell and his wife stayed during the Spanish Civil War and is mentioned in the left-wing English writers' brilliant 'Homage to Catalonia'.
Although a lot has changed since 1937, one of the public rooms at the Continental is named after him if I remember rightly.
I really like the reception area and the restaurant with a leafy interior patio where a free continental buffet is available 24 hours a day.
The Continental's 35 air-conditioned rooms are decorated in pink and include a private bathroom and flat-screen TV with satellite channels.
Harking back to days when the Continental catered to travellers with a more limited budget, a microwave and crockery set are provided in the rooms, and guests are welcome to fill the in-room fridge with food from the buffet.
Today Hotel Continental offers all the comforts you would expect from a 3 Star Hotel but retains its sense of history and eccentricity and is an absolutely brilliant choice, in my opinion.
Santa Anna, 20, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona
Set in a beautiful Modernista building on Carrer de Santa Anna, Hotel Nouvel is one of my favourite hotels of any star rating in the whole of Barcelona.
Carrer Santa Anna is a perfect location between The Ramblas and Portal de l'Àngel so you are right in the heart of the atmospheric Barri Gòtic but set slightly away from the tourists and traffic noise.
Immediately opposite the hotel entrance is the Església de Santa Anna, one of Barcelona's least known but strikingly sombre and beautiful churches.
The Hotel Nouvel building itself dates back to the late 19th century and was converted to a hotel in 1917, which makes it one Barcelona's oldest and finest hotels.
It retains many period features such as ornate ceilings, cast bronze and crystal lamps, marble floors and Roca-Sastre colour schemes
Most of Hotel Nouvel's 78 rooms are period decorated but some are a bit modern for my liking but all have air-conditioning, heating, double-glazed windows, flat screen TV and all the standard hotel accoutrements.
You have to pay extra for Wi-Fi access, which is a bit of a hassle, but that's a small price to pay to stay in such magnificent surroundings.
Estruc, 24-26, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona
Located on Carrer Estruc between Portal de l'Àngel and Via Laietana, Hotel Denit is also in the heart of the Gothic Quarter but out of earshot of hustle and bustle.
I really like the backstreets in the area opposite the Cathedral and you are also within easy walking distance of the Palau de la Música Catalana and the the bars and restaurants of trendy El Born.
The Denit is run by the Majestic Hotels group so you get excellent service at a much cheaper price than at the exclusive 5 Star on Passeig de Gràcia.
The 36 soundproofed rooms include free Wi-Fi, a plasma-screen TV and an iPod dock and are contempoararily decorated in pale wood and white furnishings.
I really like the 24-hour coffee and drinks service in the lobby and the continental breakfast features a tasty selection of hot and cold dishes.
So Hotel Denit's in a great choice for location but is a little too modern for me.
Fontanella, 7, L'Eixample, 08010 Barcelona
Located on Carrer Fontanella, which branches off the Urquinaona corner of Plaça de Catalunya, Room Mate Pau is technically in the Eixample District and just 50 metres from Barcelona's emblematic central square.
The 66 rooms at his modern design hotel feature bright chic decor, air conditioning and striking contemporary decorations.
All include a plasma TV with USB port for laptop connection, a minibar, safe and free Wi-Fi and an iPad dock as well as a modern private bathroom.
A buffet breakfast is served daily and there is also a café-bar with terrace where you can enjoy a drink or snack.
Obviously, the location is fantastic but I have to say that Room Mate Pau is a little too modern for my liking but regular Barcelona Travel Guide readers will know that I'm a sucker for anything old and Modernista.
Ronda Sant Pere, 15, L'Eixample, 08010 Barcelona
Located on the corner of Ronda de Sant Pere and Via Laietana, the Gran Ducat is very close to Plaça Urquinaona and a couple of minutes from Plaça de Catalunya.
It is housed in a restored 19th century building but features a simple modern décor in the rooms and public areas.
A varied buffet breakfast is available in the Gran Ducat’s dining room and there is a 24-hour reception.
To be perfectly honest, the 64 rooms are a quite basic and a little on the small side for a 3 Star Hotel.
However, the price of a room is also more in keeping with a 2 Star hotel so it would be unreasonable to expect the same luxury as at Hotel Nouvel, for example.
All in all the Gran Ducat is a decent choice both for the price and its excellent location.
