There is a magnificent choice of 3 Star Raval Hotels all offering reasonably-priced accommodation in the heart of Barcelona City Centre.
Most of the hotels listed here are a very short walk from La Rambla and many of the sights that Barcelona is famous
for and also slap bang in the middle of the city's brilliantly eccentric
If really pushed to make a recommendation I'd go for any of the hotels either on or just off Carrer Hospital because it's a street that captures the exciting mix of ancient and modern that sums up the best of El Raval for me.
Carrer Pintor Fortuny or Carrer Tallers are located in the top section of El Raval and are also really good whereas Nou de la Rambla is beginning to get a bit too noisy for my liking.
The locations I find least attractive are Abba Rambla Hotel on the Rambla de Raval and Andante Hotel on Avinguda Drassanes down near the port but that's just me.
So most of the 3 Star Raval Hotels look pretty good to me and if you read on, you'll discover more specific recommendations particularly regarding location.
Nou de la Rambla, 12, Ciutat Vella, 08001 Barcelona
I begin this selection of 3 Star Raval Hotels with Gaudi Hotel on Carrer Nou de la Rambla, 12 because its location directly opposite Antoni Gaudí's magnificent Palau Güell make it ideal for the budget conscious tourist, who wants to be close to a major monument.
Carrer Nou de la Rambla is the the main street into El Raval from central section of La Rambla and you're just across the way from Carrer Ferran that takes you into the Barri Gòtic and you are also directly opposite the fabulous Plaça Reial.
The 73 rooms, which range from single to quadruple, are simply but tastefully decorated and are equipped with free Wi-fi, adjustable air conditioning and heating, parquet floors, desk, phone and LCD TV with international channels.
Make sure you get a room at the front - waking up and looking out on a Gaudí masterpiece is my idea of heaven.
You're also just a few doors down from the London Bar, still with its original Modernista decor and one of Barcelona's coolest bars.
If only because of its location, Hotel Gaudí is highly recommended.
Rambla del Raval, 4, Ciutat Vella, 08001 Barcelona
If you are specifically looking for accommodation in El Raval, Abba Rambla Hotel is an excellent choice.
Located at Rambla del Raval, 4, the Abba Rambla is set in the heart of this lively neighbourhood.
This means that La Rambla and Liceu Metro Station, which is on the Green L3 Metro Line, are short walk away as are the clubs on Paral.lel or Barcelona University at Plaça Universitat and La Boqueria Market and the MACBA Museum are just round the corner.
The Abba Rambla Hotel is not the cheapest of the 3 Star Raval Hotels but it has an excellent reputation for service and comfort.
You get free WiFi and plenty of extra services, such as bicycle or car hire or even pizza delivery are available at reception.
Parking can be reserved near the hotel for an additional charge.
Avinguda Drassanes, 23-25, Ciutat Vella, 08001 Barcelona
Located at Avinguda de les Drassanes, 23-25, the modern Andante Hotel is one of the most reasonably-priced 3 Star Raval hotels.
The hotel is very close to the bottom of La Rambla and the Port and this section, which is called La Rambla de Santa Mónica and is close to Drassanes Metro Station, is much quieter.
However, you're still only five minutes walk away from the Barri Gòtic and the delights of traditional Barcelona. Being so close to the port, you also have some lovely walks along the front and should definitely check out the bars, restaurants and clubs at Maremagnum.
The modern air-conditioned rooms feature parquet floors, a laptop safe and flat-screen satellite TV and look very pleasant to me.
However, the main attraction of the Andante is the sense of space given by the large terrace and the rooftop pool, which offers great views over Barcelona.
Carrer Hospital, 11,Ciutat Vella, 08001 Barcelona
Located at Carrer Hospital, 11, Hotel Moderno is so close La Rambla that you can see the people bustling by when you look out of the window.
The building is an old Barcelona townhouse which has been very tastefully modernised, and all rooms at the Moderno are heated, air conditioned and soundproofed.
Amongst other things, this is one of the 3 star Raval hotels that offers a free breakfast, free WiFi and free use of the computers in the lobby if you haven't brought your own.
However, it's the location that's the real attraction. Carrer Hospital is in the central section of the Ramblas not only close to Liceo metro station known as La Rambla de Sant Josep, but also the Boqueria market and the famous Cafe de l'Òpera, which is also worth a visit.
You really are in the heart of things with the Barri Gòtic just five minutes walk away on the other side of La Rambla and Plaça Catalunya and the Eixample about the same distance up the street.
Carrer Hospital, 26, Ciutat Vella, 08001 Barcelona
The Hesperia Ramblas is also on Carrer Hospital but a little further in at number 26, so it's got all the advantages of Hotel Moderno but is a little quieter.
The Hesperia is one of the more modern 3 star Raval hotels set in an old part of town, which means it's extremely comfortable but the building itself is a little lacking in authenticity.
You get free Wi-Fi access and the simply-decorated rooms satellite TV, air conditioning, a minibar and a desk.
Once again the location is brilliant - the Hesperia Ramblas looks out over Plaça Sant Augustí and is on the corner of a sidestreet that takes you into the Boqueria Market back entrance, which is definitely the best way to explore this famous Barcelona market.
However, regular Barcelonas readers will know my passion for old buildings so the Hesperia Ramblas wouldn't be amongst my first choices.
Plaça Sant Agusti, 3, Ciutat Vella, 08001 Barcelona
Open since 1840, Hotel San Agustín is set in a restored convent at Plaça Sant Agusti, 3 just 150 metres from La Rambla.
Plaça Sant Augustí is a really nice place to be, actually, as it provides light and space amongst the rather cramped Raval backstreets.
Hotel San Agustín offers free Wi-Fi and functional air-conditioned rooms with flat-screen satellite TV.
The Sant Agustí serves a daily continental buffet breakfast, there is also a bar and coffee lounge and what's more you're right next door to Rita Blue, one of Barcelona's cool bars for the young and fashionable.
If I had to choose between Hotel San Agustín and Hesperia Ramblas, I think you know which one I'd go for.
Carrer Hospital, 83, Ciutat Vella, 08001 Barcelona
Alba Hotel is the third of our 3 star Raval hotels on Carrer Hospital and is much further down the street at number 83.
You're still within easy walking distance of La Rambla and all the other sights but this is the heart of El Raval.
The hotel is on the corner of Carrer d'En Robadors, once one of Barcelona's main prostitution centres, which has now been cleaned up, and although a little scruffy at first sight, the facade is listed for its artistic interest.
You're also opposite the medieval buildings of Barcelona's original hospital - L'Antic Hospital de la Santa Creu - one of my favourite spots in Barcelona, whose gardens inside offer a delightful respite from the hustle and bustle of the city centre.
Carrer Junta de Comerç, 8-12, Ciutat Vella, 08001 Barcelona
Hotel Principal is at number 8-10 Junta de Comerç, another street that branches off Carrer Hospital.
I think Hotel Principal is really cool because reminds me of the Barcelona hotels of old before they all had shiny glass doors and had cloned their foyers and reception desks.
You're stil only 200 metres from La Rambla and the rooftop terrace, 24-hour reception and free Wi-Fi access are all big plusses.
Junta del Comerç used to be called Carrer Mendizábal in honour of the politician who managed to take most of the lands away from the Spanish Catholic Church in the famous desamortización of the 19th century.
The brilliant bar on the corner still bears his name!
Carrer Pintor Fortuny, 9, Ciutat Vella, 08001 Barcelona
Located on Carrer Pintor Fortuny, 9, Hotel Turin is just 50 metres from the famous Ramblas in Barcelona.
Pintor Fortuny is further up La Rambla closer to Plaça Catalunya, which means it's slightly better for public transport than the hotels on Carrer Hospital.
It's a slightly quieter street with fewer tourist attractions in its own right but you're still incredibly close to everything you want to see.
What's more Hotel Turin is a really nice hotel with lovely stylish rooms featuring wooden floors and furnishings.
It's got a fantastic sun terrace and there's free Wi-Fi throughout the building and a nice touch is that you get free tea, coffee and computer access in reception.
Carrer Tallers, 66, Ciutat Vella, 08001 Barcelona
Hotel Ciutat Vella is at number 66 Carrer Tallers, one of my favourite Raval streets because it's home to the mythical Discos Castelló plus lots more vinyl record shops and guitar shops, which means you get a lot of ageing rock'n'roll types like me hanging around.
The Ciutat Vella is set at the end of Tallers where it opens out into a kind of square so there's plenty of light.
Don't be put off by the two closed shops on either side of the front entrance which have been grafittied because once inside Hotel Ciutat Vella is really nice and this part of El Raval has a really laid back atmosphere.
It's got colourful, modern rooms, a rooftop hot tub and terrace and free water, coffee and internet at reception with free Wi-Fi throughout the building so it's a pretty cool place to stay.
There are in fact more 3 Star Raval Hotels to choose from - Hotel Ronda at Carrer Sant Erasme, 19, Hotel Reding and Grupotel Gravina both on Carrer Gravina and Hotel Atlantis, Hotel Lleó and Hotel Inglaterra all on Carrer Pelai.
All these hotels technically are in the Raval neighbourhood, but in my opininion the Raval atmosphere, which if you're reading a page called 3 Star Raval Hotels is presumably what you're looking for, only extends as far up as Carrer Tallers.
These hotels are all really nice but imply a different kind of Barcelona experience so I'll create a separate page which talks about the area close to Universitat metro separately.
