1931 - Barcelona: Francesc Macià proclaims the « Catalan Republic in the Iberian Federation», a pro-independence action that would be diluted until the proclamation of the Second Spanish Republic.

1943 - Barcelona: The opening of the Museu d'Història de la Ciutat.

1976 - Barcelona: Gonzalo Pontón founds Editorial Crítica.

1994 - Vallès Occidental: Badia del Vallès separates from Cerdanyola del Vallès and Barberà del Vallès to form a separate municipality.

2002 - Figueres (Alt Empordà): The Orquestra de Cambra de l'Empordà impulses the foundation of the Orquestra Filharmònica de Catalunya.

2005 - Madrid: The Council of Ministers approves the bill that permits the return of the documents that were in the Arxiu General de la Guerra Civil de Salamanca and the creation of the Centre Documental de la Memòria Històrica in the city.


1886 - Tornabous, Província de Lleida: Salvador Seguí i Rubinat, known as the «Noi del Sucre» (Sugar Boy), anarcho-syndicalist.

1894 - Barcelona: Enric Casassas i Cantó, Catalan pedagogue.

1920 - Cervera, Província de Lleida: Josep Benet i Morell, historian, publisher and politician.

1931 - Barcelona: Fanny Da Rosa, writer.

1951 - Íllora, Andalusia: José Eduardo González Navas, Catalan politician.

1952 - Figueres (Alt Empordà): Carles Coll i Costa, musician.


1864 - Tarragona: Josep Domènec Costa i Borràs, Archbishop of Tarragona, founder of the Missioneres de la Immaculada Concepció.

1910 - Madrid, Spain: Emili Sala i Francés, Valencian painter (born 1850).

1937 - Barcelona: Francesc de Paula Xercavins i Rius, Catalan psychiatrist (born 1855).

2014 - Barcelona: Albert Manent i Segimon, Catalan writer.

Festivals and Commemorations

Good Friday or Divendres Sant is the Friday before Easter Sunday and commemorates Jesus Christ's death on the cross. In 2017, it falls on April 16th and there are processions throughout Catalonia.
