1936 - The island of Formentera is occupied by the Republican army, under the orders of Alberto Bayo.

1954 - France: Josep Tarradellas becomes president of the Generalitat in exile, succeeding Josep Irla.

1979 - 22 people died in a fire in the woods close to Lloret de Mar (la Selva)

1913 - Barcelona: Aurora Díaz-Plaja Contestí, Catalan librarian and writer (died 2003).
   
1948 - Palma, Mallorca: Pau Riba i Romeva, polyfacetic singer.
   
1960 - Alboraia, Horta Nord: Rosana Pastor, Valencian actress.


Deaths

1924 - Barcelona: Joan Salvat-Papasseit, writer.
   
2007 - Sabadell: Ramon Noè i Hierro, Catalan illustrator and painter
