I'm taking Barcelona City Centre Hotels to mean those around Plaça de Catalunya and consequently, have chosen a selection of establishments with one to five stars.
Many Internet hotel booking sites treat Barcelona City Centre as a much larger area.
Although from August 2012, street prostitution is illegal, these areas are still quite raunchy and can be quite dangerous at night.
The hotels I've chosen below basically circle Plaça de Catalunya and give me a chance to mention each location very briefly.
They're all ideal for families or couples and I have included a link to the hotel itself and another to the booking page for all hotels in Barcelona City Centre with this star rating.
La Rambla, 125, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona
Although not as cheap as it's One Star rating might suggest, Hotel Lloret Ramblas is not only a Barcelona institution but it's prime location right at the top of the Ramblas on La Rambla de Canaletes is really difficult to beat.
You are right in the middle of the tourist hub just a few yards down from Plaça Catalunya and the metro and train station is just a minute's walk away.
Hotel Lloret is quite basic but it is clean, pleasant and functional and some rooms even have a private balcony.
I particularly like the downstairs lounge with its free newspapers and old world feel.
The Lloret is definitely the perfect place for the budget conscious traveller who wants to combine a touch of history with being right in the heart of things.
Carrer Pelai, 6, Ciutat Vella, 08001 Barcelona
Hotel Marvi is located on Carrer Pelai a few metres from Catalunya metro station and the Ramblas so you're right in the centre of things and just a short walk from most of what you want to see.
This Two Star offers 30 modern and comfy double rooms, all of which have an en suite bathroom as well as TV, Wi-Fi, telephone, air conditioning, heating and a hairdryer.
Although not quite as impressive as Hotel Lloret, the prices at Hotel Marvi are extremely reasonable and breakfast is included.
The location really cannot be beaten and the fact that it is such a small hotel means the service is very personalised.
Portal de l'Angel, 17, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona
Formerly known as the Hotel Albinoni, this 3 Star Hotel is located on the magnificent pedestrianised Portal de l'Angel, which is amongst Barcelona's best shopping streets.
All 83 rooms are equipped with air-conditioning, satellite TV and free Wi-Fi and I particularly like the outdoor pool surrounded by painted murals.
What's more the Catalonia Portal de l'Àngel is set in a neoclassical palace built by celebrated architect Pere Bassegoda in 1872 and you're just round the corner from Els Quatre Gats, the bar where Picasso first exhibited so the combination of location and comfort makes this an excellent choice.
Bergara, 11, Eixample, 08002 Barcelona
Located on Carrer Bergara just a short walk from Plaça de Catalunya on the Universitat side, Hotel Catalonia Plaza Cataluña is a lot quieter than any of the hotels we've seen so far.
Carrer Bergara is set just off Plaça de Catalunya so you are right in the middle of things but this lovely Modernista building is set back just far enough away from the noise and traffic.
The building itself dates from 1899 and was designed by Emilio Salas y Cortés, one of Gaudí's masters, and the interior patio with its pool and sun terrace is a prime feature.
The Catalonia Plaza Cataluña offers full conference facilities and I've also heard very good things about the quality of the hotel restaurant so all in all it is an excellent City Centre choice.
Plaça Reial, 1, Ciutat Vella, 08001 Barcelona
Hotel DO Plaça Reial is set in a magnificent square just off the Ramblas on the Barri Gòtic side with lamp posts by Gaudí.
Plaça Reial used to have a bad reputation but is now surrounded by great bars, clubs and eateries, including Karma - my favourite disco - and Jamboree - one of Barcelona's top jazz clubs and in many respects, the presence of such a select 5 Star Hotel is a sure sign of the square's recent gentrification.
Each of the 18 spacious, air-conditioned rooms features striking, modern décor and is equipped with free Wi-Fi, a Loewe flat-screen TV and a free minibar..
Hotel DO Plaça Reial boasts not just one but two highly regarde restaurants and the rooftop terrace and pool with spectacular out over the square and the rest of the Barri Gòtic is definitely something to write home about.
