There is an enormous range of El Born Hotels, ranging from 4 Star establishments to very basic hostels in or close to this fashionable Barcelona neighbourhood.
El Born is ideally placed between the historic Gothic Quarter and La Barceloneta beach district, so it is a brilliant place to stay if you want to within walking distance of both the Barcelona beaches and the main tourist sights..
All these hotels are on the edge rather than in the heart of El Born, whose name has become very fashionable recently.
To be technically correct, though, we are dealing with Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i La Ribera neighbourhood that centres on El Passeig del Born that runs between the fabulous Santa Maria del Mar Cathedral and the old El Born Market.
As with all my hotels pages, I try to take a logical route round the neighbourhood so I don't have to repeat location indications in every review.
For this Barcelona El Born Hotels page, we begin at Jaume I metro station and take in Hotel Banys Orientals and Equity Point Gothic, both of which are in the Carrer Argenteria area.
We then head down vibrant Carrer Princesa for Chic & Basic Born until we get to K+K Hotel Picasso and Chic&Basic Zoo on Passeig Picasso opposite Parc de la Ciutadella.
The circuit of El Born hotels continues with a clutch of cheap hotels and hostels opposite Estació de França railway station and we finish with 3 Star Park Hotel and 4 Star Hotel Ciutadella Barcelona a little further down Marquès d'Argentera.
Suffice to say, whatever you call this neighbourhood, the location is fantastic and everything is within easy walking distance of the Barri Gòtic and the beaches at La Barceloneta.
Carrer Argenteria, 37, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona
I'm beginning this selection of Barcelona El Born Hotels with Hotel Banys Orientals because it's the hotel that's closest to Passeig del Born and even so, located on Carrer Argenteria, it's on the edge of the neighbourhood.
Set in a magnificent 18th century building on the street that leads down from Jaume I metro station to the sublime Santa Maria del Mar church, Hotel Banys Orientals is extraordinarily cool.
Most rooms and suites at Hotel Banys Orientals have a balcony and all feature stylish, contemporary décor and soundproofing with a laptop, safe, satellite TV, fridge with free water, free Wi-Fi and private bathroom with hairdryer.
The hotel’s highly regarded Senyor Parellada restaurant offers traditional Catalan cuisine in a delightful setting.
Hotel Banys Orientals is set on a pedestrianised street with several bars, restaurants and shops, which is a little too busy for my liking, but it is undoubtedly the best situated hotel for El Born and is also in very easy reach of the Gothic Quarter.
Carrer dels Vigatans, 5, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona
Equity Point Gothic Hostel is located justed off Carrer Argenteria to your left before you get to Hotel Banys Orientals so it is actually closer to Jaume I metro station but a little less 'El Born' if we want to take the concept literally.
Run by the Equity Point hostel chain, who have establishments all over Barcelona, the Gothic offers cheap shared accommodation for those travelling on a budget who also want to make friends.
Equity Point Gothic has a roof terrace, a common room with free internet, TV and background music and dormitories with individual lockers.
The reception is open 24 hours a day and there are no curfews or lockouts, which is perfect if you are young and want to have fun.
Breakfast is served every day, and there is also a basic kitchen for guests' use.
So all in all, Equity Point Gothic is a great choice for the budget traveller!
Carrer de la Princesa, 50, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona
Located on the magnificent Carrer de la Princesa that divides the Santa Caterina and Ribera neighbourhoods and links La Rambla, Plaça de Sant Jaume and Parc de la Ciutadella, Chic and Basic Born is on the main street of one of Barcelona's most vibrant districts.
Definitely chic but in this case not so basic, the 3 Star Chic and Basic Born is one of the chain's showcase hotels.
Housed in a century old building with a grand stone staircase, the hotel is ultra-modern once you are inside and I have to say the contrast is effective.
Decorated in white and black with metallic fittings, the rooms have an LED lighting system and a TFT TV.
There is also a gym and you have internet access and a free coffee and water service in a communal lounge with comfortable designer chairs.
The buffet breakfast is served in the hotel's café-restaurant next door where you can also dine at very reasonable prices.
Passeig de Picasso, 26-30, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona
Located on Passeig Picasso, K+K Hotel Picasso is directly opposite Parc de la Ciutadella so you are facing pleasant greenery whilst having the bars and restaurants of El Born within a short walk.
This boutique hotel features a rooftop swimming pool, a restaurant and stylish rooms with free Wi-Fi.
Each modern, air-conditioned room at K+K Hotel Picasso has contemporary décor with a flat-screen satellite TV, a coffee maker and a minibar.
The buffet breakfast in the Picasso restaurant looks very good and the daytime and evening offer means guests can enjoy Spanish cuisine, including tapas dishes for dinner.
Passeig Picasso, 22, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona
From the same chain as Chic & Basic Born, 1 Star Chic & Basic Zoo is a little more basic but still very chic.
The hotel is located on the first floor of a classical stone building on Passeig Picasso and the rooms come in XL, L, M and single sizes.
The company trademark is the juxtaposition of traditional architecture and modern design and the rooms at Chic & Basic Zoo combine black, white and metallic fittings.
There are exterior and interior rooms with en suite bathroom and shower and many have views of the park.
This hotel looks like a real bargain to me because you get hotel installations and service at hostel prices.
Carrer del Comerç, 33, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona
The Pension Ciudadela guest house is set back a little from Marquès d'Argentera on Carrer del Commerç and is the first of the cheap hostels close to the Estació de França railway station.
Just a short walk from Parc de la Ciutadella, Ciudadela Park is a traditional hostel and offers basic rooms with air-conditioning and heating.
There are no frills but you get free Wi-Fi, a TV with private or shared bathroom facilities and most rooms have a work desk and a private balcony.
There are vending machines for drinks and snacks but with so many bars close by in El Born that is the least of your concerns.
I definitely like the look of this place -great location at a great price.
It like the kind of places I stayed in when I first arrived in Barcelona in the late 1980s.
Avenida Marqués de la Argentera, 13, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona
Located on Marquès d'Argentera itself, Hostal Orleans is even closer to the Estació de França Train Station and is is a pleasant reminder that a little while ago El Born was not as fashionable as it is now.
With a 2 Star rating it's a little more expensive than Pension Cuidadela but is still very reasonably priced and is perfect for the budget traveller given its great location just a short walk from the Gothic Quarter in one direction and Barceloneta beach in the other.
Hostal Orleans is also just 50 metres from Parc de la Ciutadella and many of the rooms have balconies with a view of the park.
The brightly decorated rooms at Hostal Orleans have heating and air-conditiong as well as free Wi-Fi, a plasma TV, safe and a private bathroom with hairdryer.
The communal lounge is equipped with sofas, computers with free internet and drinks vending machines and a microwave so you can heat up basic food.
Hostal Orleans also takes me back to when I arrived in Barcelona in the late 1980s and looks an excellent choice.
Avinguda Marquès d'Argentera, 19, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona
Hostal Nuevo Colón shares many of the characteristics of the previous two hostels both in terms of price and location opposite the station with the added advantage that it also offers apartment rentals at hostel prices for for up to 6 people so it is a great option if you are coming with a group of friends.
Once again the accommodation is quite basic but the rooms are heated and some have a fan or balcony whilst apartments come with a balcony, a well-equipped kitchen and bunk beds and also include a dining room.
Hostal Nuevo Colón offers luggage storage, a safe and Wi-Fi in public areas as well as tourist information at the 24-hour reception.
Rere Palau, 4, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona
Pension Francia guest house is the last of our little selection of cheap hotels and hostels opposite the station and is located just off Marquès d'Argentera on Rere Palau.
I hadn't mentioned this previously but there is a lot to be said for statying on one of the sidestreets especially if you have booked a cheap hotel which is unlikely to be soundproofed.
These streets behind Mercat del Born are quiet, atmospheric and very safe at night.
Anyway Pension Francia offers bright rooms with heating, tiled floors, a sink and also a ventilator fan with shared bathroom facilities.
It is possible to request an extra bed in most rooms and reception is open 24-hours a day.
Once again a cheap, clean, pleasant hotel in a great location.
Avinguda Marquès d'Argentera, 11, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona
Located next door to Hostal Orleans opposite Estació de França Station in Barcelona’s trendy Born district, Park Hotel definitely more upmarket but certainly won't break the bank.
The Park Hotel is set in a 1950s building in the 'Neo-Rationalist' style and is actually a listed building.
The air-conditioned rooms at the Park feature modern décor in gentle chocolate tones and are equipped with satellite TV, soundproofing and free Wi-Fi.
A buffet breakfast is served daily in the hotel’s Tens Bar, which also has a very pleasant outdoor terrace on Marquès d'Argentera.
Initially under the tutelage of ABaC's Jordu Cruz, Argentinian chef Fernando Silva is making a serious attempt to put Park Hotels 10s restaurant on the Barcelona culinary map with a modern combination of tapas and signature cuisine.
Furthermore, Barceloneta Metro Station on the Yellow L4 Metro Line is located 300 metres from the hotel and connects you with Barcelona City Centre in just 5 minutes.
For price, location and installations, Park Hotel looks like a fantastic choice to me and I would be surprised if it adds another star in the near future.
Avinguda Marquès de l'Argentera, 4, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona
All comments regarding location for Hostal Orleans and Park Hotel are also true of Hotel Ciutadella Barcelona, which also has an ideal central setting within 300 metres of Santa María del Mar Church, Ciutadella Park and Barceloneta Metro Station.
The hotel, run by Gargallo Hotels, opened in 2012 and is housed in a historic building.
All 59 modern rooms are tastefully decorated and have air conditioning, heating, television and a complete en-suite bathroom
Although there is a breakfast room and a bar, I think the lack of a decent restaurant is a negative point for any establishment wanting to offer 4 Star service.
However, the bars and cafés on Passeig del Born are jusr 200 metres away so this is of little importance in practical terms.
