For the first time in 2013, the City Council plans to turn Barcelona New Year's Eve into a symbol for the city with international media coverage on a similar level to Sydney, London or New York.
Avinguda Maria Cristina and the Font de Montjuïc have been chosen as the venue for a megaparty to welcome in 2014 and the event is being organised by Turisme de Barcelona with the support of the Ajuntament, Fira de Barcelona, la Cambra de Comerç, el Gremi d'Hotels and Movistar.
The budget for the celebrations is around €400,000 and will be organised by radical theatre group La Fura dels Baus, Focus with fireworks by Igual so is definitely another chance for Barcelona to show off its artistic brand.
The focus of attention will be L'Home del Mil.leni - The Millenium Man - a 15 metre high human figure, who was created for the year 2000 celebrations.
Xavier Trias has stated that the idea is to create a festival that is 'civic, familiar and open to everyone' that will 'transmit a powerful image of the city.'
Alcoholic drinks will not be on sale and the event will begin at 11.30 and finish at 12.15 and the aim is definitely to compete for worldwide media attention.
To ring in 2014, two massive screens will be set up on either side of Avinguda Maria Cristina and clocks will be projected onto them.
Carles Padrissa, Artistic Director of Fura dels Baus, has promised a special surprise, though.
Just before the chimes, a 'volcano of fire' is planned and midnight will be announced with a gigantic explosion from behind the magic fountain.
