Carme Forcadell i Lluís was born in Xerta, Baix Ebre in 1956 and is a Catalan activist, linguist and now politician.
She was a founder of the Plataforma per la Llengua and President of the grassroots pro-independence organisation the Assemblea Nacional Catalana, the Catalan National Assembly, from its foundation in 2012 until May 2015.
She was Number Two on the Junts pel Sí (Together for Yes) coalition list for Barcelona for the elections to the Parliament of Catalonia on September 7th 2015, and was elected President of Parliament, a role similar to the Speaker of the House of Commons, in a parliamentary session on October 26th 2015.
She hit the headlines December 15th 2016 when her appearance before the Tribunal Superior de Catalunya to answer questions over allowing a pro-Catalan independence bill to be passed in the Parliament of Catalonia under her presidency provoked a mass demonstration in her favour and the support of all the Catalan political parties in favour of a referendum.
