All these cheap Barri Gotic Hotels have at least a 1 star rating and offer basic budget accommodation in central Barcelona.
Obviously, you get what you pay for so don't expect the Ritz - many
offer shared or individual rooms with or without an en suite bathroom
and some have communal cooking and eating areas.
Once again, I think that location is the prime consideration and although all are centrally located, I would go for any of the cheap hotels or hostels on Carrer de la Boqueria because it's a quiet safe street just off La Rambla.
I also favour Hotel Call on Arc Sant Ramón Del Call and Rey Don Jaime I on Carrer Jaume I for safety and convenience reasons.
The rest are off Carrer Avinyó and Plaça Reial or closer to the Port where the atmosphere is a bit funkier. If you are young and wild these might be just the job, but an oldster like me prefers peace, quiet and safety.
Plaça Reial, 11, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona
Located directly on Placa Reial, the Roma Reial is right in the thick of things and is ideal for the budget traveller in search of fun.
The clubs and bars of Plaça Reial are right on your doorstep and Hotel Roma Reial is very well situated for La Rambla and the rest of the Barri Gòtic.
As it's a 1 Star Hotel, the Roma Reial offers simple functional rooms with a TV and views of the square.
On the ground floor, there's a restaurant where you can sit at the terrace under the original stone archways and look out on Plaça Reial whilst enjoying a drink or a Mediterranean meal.
Carrer Boqueria, 17, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona
Hotel Inglés is located on Carrer de la Boqueria right next to the Ramblas, Boquería market and Liceo metro station, 5 minutes’ walk from Plaça Catalunya.
It offers 24-hour reception and rooms with free Wi-Fi and satellite TV. Rooms at the Hotel Inglés are simple and comfortable and come with a private bathroom and a ceiling fan, and some rooms have a private balcony.
Bearing in mind the location, Hotel Inglés looks an excellent choice to me.
Carrer Boqueria, 21, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona
Also on Carrer de la Boqueria, Hostal Palermo is in a brilliant location just off the central section of Barcelona's famous Ramblas.
To give you an idea of how good this is, there are two very swish 4 Star Hotels just a few doors away.
Obviously, rooms at the Palermo are simple and functional and range from standard doubles to quintuple rooms, which work out very cheaply if you are travelling with a group.
All have heating and a fan and some have private bathrooms. Facilities at the Palermo include a 24-hour reception, luggage storage, vending machine and free Wi-Fi access throughout.
Carrer Boqueria, 18, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona
Carrer de la Boqueria is a much more pleasant way of getting from La Rambla to Plaça de Sant Jaume and the heart of the Barri Gòtic, by the way.
As far as the accommodation itself is concerned, Hostal Europa offers basic rooms in a central location, and has free Wi-Fi in public areas. Most rooms at the Europa have shared bathroom facilities and rooms with a private en suite bathroom are also available.
It's also worth mentioning that Hostal Europa is significantly cheaper than the two previously mentioned hotels.
Arc Sant Ramón Del Call, 4, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona
With an address Arc Sant Ramón del Call which runs off Carrer de la Boqueria into the atmospheric streets of the Gothic Quarter, I'd say that Hotel Call is even better located than the other hotels I've mentioned so far.
El Call was the medieval Jewish Quarter of the Old City and still within walking distance of everything is one of my favourite parts of Barcelona.
The rooms in the Hotel Call are spacious and practical and all have air conditioning, heating, free Wi-Fi and a safe. This is one of the few cheap Barri Gotic hotels where bathrooms have both a bath and shower.
Hotel Call is also very reasonably priced so I reckon it's an excellent choice if you're travelling on a budget.
Carrer Jaume I, 11, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona
Hotel Rey Don Jaime I is another hotel in a really excellent location on Carrer Jaume I between Via Laietana and Plaça de Sant Jaume, right next to Jaume I Metro station, which is on the Yellow L4 Metro Line.
This means that whilst technically in the Barri Gòtic, you're also very close to the bars and eateries of trendy El Born and the amazing Santa Maria del Mar church and you are also just a short walk from the Parc de la Ciutadella.
The guest house offers private rooms with a bathroom, fan, TV and free Wi-Fi. More basic dorm rooms with shared bathrooms are also available very cheaply at the Rey Don Jaime I.
So this is another hotel that definitely gets a thumbs up in terms of location and price.
Carrer Avinyó 37, Principal, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona
Located at the Carrer Ample end of Carrer Avinyó, Hostal Baires is the first of our hotels on the port side of Carrer Ferran.
It is close to the Port Vell and a short walk from La Rambla and Plaça de Sant Jaume, and set behind a big wooden door on the first floor - Principal - of a slightly run down building it's rather like a pension of old.
It offers simple single, double or twin rooms with central heating and free Wi-Fi and they can be booked with or without a bath or shower.
Staff at reception can provide information about what to see and do in Barcelona. Hostal Baires also offers laundry and luggage storage facilities from the front desk.
Carrer Nou de Sant Francesc, 40, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona
Located on Nou de Sant Francesc, one of the backstreets close to bottom of The Ramblas, Hotel Cantón is conveniently situated for the Port Vell and Drassanes metro station, which is on the Green L3 Metro Line.
This is one of the cheap Barri Gotic hotels featuring rooms with satellite TV, private bathrooms, a fridge and free Wi-Fi access throughout.
The Cantón serves a daily breakfast and has a vending machine selling hot drinks. Guests can also make use of the hotel’s TV room, where there is also computer.
Baixada de Sant Miquel, 2, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona
Hostal Levante is located in a rather regal but delapidated building on Baixada de Sant Miquel, just off Carrer Avinyó and a short walk from Plaça Reial.
I really like the look of Hostal Levante, which offers free Wi-Fi and a 24-hour reception.
Rooms are heated and have a fan and work desk and private or shared bathrooms are available. Hostal Levante guest house has a vending machine where drinks are available.
This is another hotel that reminds me of times gone by.
Carrer Escudellers, 15, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona
Situated on Carrer Escudellers, Hotel Comercio is in the centre of the triangle formed by La Rambla, Plaça Reial and the Gothic Quarter, just 200 meters from the port.
All the rooms have en suite facilities and are sunny, overlooking the Carrer Escudellers or La Rambla.
Hotel Comercio that has recently been renovated and is equipped with modern conveniences and there's also a large common room.
Carrer Escudellers can be quite rough but certainly if I was young and wanted to be close to the raunchy Barcelona atmosphere then Hotel Comercio would be a good choice.
Carrer Palau, 6 1º, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona
Located just off Carrer Avinyó 200 metres from Barcelona Town Hall, Alberg Palau offers a free Wi-Fi zone, 24-hour reception and free breakfast.
Each bright dormitory has individual storage lockers and a small balcony and access to modern shared bathrooms.
Towels and sheets can be rented from reception, and single-sex rooms are available on request.
Guests can use the communal kitchen from 19:00 until 22:00 daily, and there is a dining area in the TV lounge.
