Over the last few years, some of Barcelona's most iconic Gothic churches, Santa Anna, Santa Maria del Pi and others, have organised a programme of summer concerts in Barcelona churches.
This really is a fantastic way to enjoy beautiful music in a sublime environment and not surprisingly all three churches are blessed with excellent acoustics.
The cycles take place between May and September and most of the concerts tend to feature classical guitar soloists or duos as guitar music really benefits from the church acoustics.
However, there are also occasional larger format concerts often involving classical or gospel choirs or instrumental soloists accompanied by an ensemble.
In order to find out the this year's full programme at each venue, please click on the links below.
Probably the most frequently used church is the Basílica de Santa Maria del Pi, which hosts the Maestros de la Guitarra cycle of classical and Spanish guitar concerts as well as occasional choral and gospel concerts.
Incidentally, the Maestros de la Guitarra series also features occasional concerts at the Esgésia de Sant Jaume and the really big events are held at the Palau de la Música Catalana.
However, in my opinion, it is the awe-inspiring atmosphere of Santa Maria de Pi that makes by far the best venue for these concerts in Barcelona churches.

Not to be outdone, the main cycle of concerts at the Església de Santa Anna is the Música y Vino, or Music and Wine, cycle that takes place in the cloister of this fabulous but little known former monastery.
The cloister really is a wonderful place to see and hear music and the added incentive of excellent wine makes the whole experience all the more enjoyable.
In comparison with the quite classical programme at Santa Maria del Pi, the concerts at Santa Anna tend to feature more Spanish guitar music with a generous dose of flamenco.
