Heribert Barrera i Costa was born in Barcelona on July 6th 1917 and died in the same city, aged 94, on August 17th 2011.
He was a Catalan chemist and politician and as a member of Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya was the first president of the restored Parliament of Catalonia from 1980 to 1984.
Herribert Barrera was the son of Martí Barrera i Maresma, who was also a member of ERC, who served in the Parliament of Catalonia and was a conseller in the Generalitat of Catalonia.
Barrera dedicated his life to fighting for the Catalan Republic and of the rights and freedoms of Catalonia and is considered a point of reference for the Catalan independence movement.
Heribert Barrera began his political career in 1934 when he joined the Federació Nacional d'Estudiants de Catalunya and the Bloc Escolar Nacionalista. THe following year he joined the Joventuts d'Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya, the Esquerra Republicana youth movement.
When Franco came to power in 1939, Barrera was forced into exile and was involved in the Esquerra Republicana reorganisation. He was general secretary of the party from 1976 to 1987 and president from 1991 to 1995.
Between 1977 and 1980, he was a member of the Consell Català del Moviment Europeu and also a deputy of the Congreso de los Diputados in Madrid. In 1980, he became a deputy in the Parliament of Catalonia, after heading the ERC list in the elections in which the party won 14 deputies.
Barrera was elected president of the Parliament of Catalonia for the first two democratic legislatures from 1980 to 1984.
From 1990 to 1994, he was member of the European Parliament for the coalition of ERC, Euskoalkartasuna and the Partido Nacionalista Gallego.
He was awarded the Medalla d'Honor del Parlament de Catalunya in 2001 and once retired he dedicated himself mainly to writing.
Shortly before his death in 2011, Heribert Barrera participated along with other former presidents of the Parliament of Catalonia, Heribert Barrera participated in the major demonstration against the Constitutional Court's ruling on the Estatut under the slogan "Som una nació. Nosaltres decidim" (We are a nation, we decide) on July 10th 2010.
