The Mercat del Besòs was built in 1968 in order to fulfill the need for a market big enough to meet local necessities, which was caused by the sudden growth of the
Besòs neighbourhood due to mass immigration ithroughout the 1960s.
The Besòs Market serves the local community very well with a good line in poultry, game and eggs, meats and offal, Spanish hams and sausages.
There are also fruit and vegetable stalls as well as fresh fish and seafood, salted fish and preserves, frozen foods, provisions, pulses and cereals, dried fruit and
nuts, ready-made meals, health foods and herbal remedies, freshly-baked bread, sweets and cakes, perfumes and cosmetics.
Non-food stalls include those selling children's and adults' clothes and gifts and items for the home.
There is also an open-air market on non-holiday Saturdays as well as additional services, such as free parking and a non-centralised home delivery service.
