December 26th is La Diada de Sant Esteve or the Saints' Day of Saint Stephen, the first Christian martyr. In Catalonia, Sant Esteve, is the continuation of El Dia de Nadal and is a public holiday.
Sant Esteve or Saint Stephen was born in the early first century and died probably in AD 34 or 35. He is considered a protomartyr and is thought to be the first Christian martyr.
He was a Hellenised Jew and is his real name isn't known, he is given the name Stephanos, which means Crown in Greek.
Apparently, he was one of seven new members recruited bt the disciples shortly after Jesus Christ's death in order to give out charity to widows in the early Christian church and preach the gospel.
He was accused of blaspheming against Moses and God and when brought before the Sanhedrin gave a fiery speech, which angered the crowd who took him outside the city walls and stoned him to death.
In Catalonia, Sant Esteve is patron saint of Bagà, Cantallops, Castellar del Vallès, Fonollosa, la Garriga, Granollers, Ripollet, Riudellots de la Selva, Sallent, Sant Esteve de la Doma, Sant Esteve Sesrovires, Sords, Tavèrnoles, and Vila-seca.
