The three distinct neighbourhoods of Vallvidrera, El Tibidabo i Les Planes are grouped together as one administrative unit that covers a large territory on the Collserola hills.
The hamlet of Vallvidrera, which has been part of Sarrià since 1890, is
centred on the Gothic church of Santa Maria de Vallvidrera, built
between 1540 and 1587.
Another building of interest is the Villa Joana, which was the last home of the great Catalan poet Jacint Verdaguer.
The urban development of Vallvidrera began in the second half of the 19th century with the building of the Valvidrera Reservoir in 1864, the Valvidrera-Tibidabo road in 1888 and the Carretera de les Aigües in 1902.
The Tramvia Blau tram line between Vallvidrera and Tibidabo opened in 1901 and the Funicular in 1906.
By the early 20th century, Vallvidrera became a popular place for bourgeois Barcelonans to build a second home but, as you can see from the photo above, today it has an established permanent community.
Les Planes, which includes the areas of Mas Sauró, Mas Guimbau and el Rectoret and is located on the Vallès side of Collserola.
In the mid-19th century Les Planes briefly became popular as a summer resort with hotels, fountains and picnic areas and at the end of the century it was beginning to be urbanised.
By the 1950s, Les Planes had grown into an uncontrolled sprawl of buildings and it wasn't until 1980 that the current urban plan was approved.
El Tibidabo was a destination for trips and excursions until the Carretera de la Arrabassada was opened in 1888.
The building of the celebrated Tibidabo funfair began a little later followed by the Observatori Fabra between 1902 and 1904 and the Temple del Sagrat Cor, begun in 1902 but not finished until the 1960s.
In 1992 the Torre Collserola communications tower was completed and the funfair became the property of Barcelona City Council.
There is a small residential zone next to the attractions park.
Each part of Vallvidrera, El Tibidabo i Les Planes has a Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat station at Baixador de Vallvidrera, Les Planes and Estació d'Avinguda Tibidabo respectively.
