2008, the First Major Pro-Independence Demonstration

Som una nació, volem un estat propi

Although I would agree 2012 saw the first massive pro-independence –i.e. over one-million–, I consider the first major one –in the tens of thousands– was in 2008, headed by the slogan "We are a nation–we want our own state" (i.e. not Spain). The main reason for the relatively small numbers was that it was called by a grass-roots organisation, Sobirania i Progrés, and the only parliamentary party to back it was Esquerra Republicana. It was, however, the chief signal showing that Catalan society was clearly heading towards today's pro-independence majority.

We Are A Nation, We Decide
by: Simon

Thanks for that.

We also mustn't forget the "Som una nació, Nosaltres decidim" (We Are A Nation, We Decide) Demonstration, which was held on July 10th 2010 in response to the Constitutional Court's decision on the Statute of Autonomy. This was the first major pro-independence demonstration I attended in Barcelona along with over a million others.
