The 4 Star El Born Hotels listed here are all on the edge of this most fashionable of Barcelona neighbourhoods and are ideally located for both the historic Barri Gòtic and La Barceloneta beach and port area.
Everything in this part of Barcelona City Centre is just a short walk away but it is worth bearing in mind that technically El Born is actually a very restricted area that runs from Santa Maria del Mar church along the Passeig del Born to El Mercat del Born, which is now a cultural centre and archaeological site known as El Born Centre de Cultura i Memòria.
Partly due to its trendiness, misinformed travel writers and journalists have extended the term El Born to include the whole of Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i La Ribera.
These three neighbourhoods, grouped together for administrative purpose, comprise the section of Gothic Barcelona, which first grew up outside the Roman Walls in the 7th century and then was separated from El Barri Gòtic by the building of the main Via Laietana road in the early 20th century.
Most of El Born Hotels listed below are in the area closest to the sea, which includes El Born, and is known as La Ribera.
This neighbourhood begins on the Barceloneta side of the Estació de França railway station but the the main boundaries are defined by Avinguda Marquès d'Argentera which connects Passeig de Picasso and Parc de la Ciutadel.la with Via Laietana.
A little further up the hill on the other side of Carrer de la Princesa, the Mercer Boria Bcn is in the Sant Caterina neighbourhood and the Catalonia Born is actually in Sant Pere, both of which are as nice as - if not nicer than - El Born itself, in my opinion.
However, as I said earlier, all the major monuments are within easy walking distance so you really need to base your choice by looking at the advantages and disadvantages of each of these 4 Star El Born Hotels individually.
Pas de Sota Muralla, 9, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona
More La Barceloneta than El Born, the lovely H10 Port Vell is located just behind Estació de França railway station close to the Old Port just inside the boundaries of Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i La Ribera.
This is an ultramodern design hotel set in a 19th century building, which only opened in 2013, and represents a new generation of Barcelona hotels that combine hi tech and history.
The 58 air-conditioned rooms at H10 Port Vell feature a 42-inch flat-screen TV, minibar, Nespresso coffee machine and a luxuriously equipped bathroom and free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel.
However, whilst other facilities include a gym, a lobby bar and a restaurant open for breakfast, the hotel's star feature is the rooftop chill out terrace, which has a swimming pool and spectacular views of the port and the Barcelona skyline.
As H10 Port Vell opened so recently, I haven't yet had an opportunity to visit it but I am aware that it receives excellent reviews and star ratings.
Avinguda Marquès de l'Argentera, 4, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona
Set in a magnificent neoclassical buiding right next to Estació de França, Hotel Ciutadella Barcelona is perfectly located for Parc de la Ciutadella and El Born as well as La Barceloneta and Port Vell.
This modern hotel opened in 2012 and each of the 59 air-conditioned and soundproofed rooms at Hotel Ciutadella Barcelona is decorated in a contemporary style and equipped with a TV and a private bathroom.
Rooms look out both out on the impressive Avinguda Marqués de l'Argentera and also onto a very fine interior patio.
Hotel Ciutadella offers a full breakfast service as well as a bar and snack bar, and the fact that it doesn't have its own restaurant is of little concern given the proximity of the excellent bars and restaurants in El Born and La Barceloneta.
Hotel Ciutadella Barcelona looks like an excellent accommodation option to me.
Passeig de Picasso, 26-30, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona
I have to say that, from an aesthetic point of you, I absolutely love the look of K+K Hotel Picasso.
Set in a fine building on Passeig Picasso, immediately facing Parc de la Ciutadella and backing on to Mercat del Born itself, the location really couldn't be better.
Each of the 100 modern, air-conditioned room at K+K Hotel Picasso has a flat-screen satellite TV, coffee maker, minibar and free Wi-Fi.
Guests can enjoy a buffet breakfast in the Picasso’s restaurant and typical Spanish cuisine, including tapas dishes, is served for dinner and there is also a café and a lobby bar serving cocktails.
The hotel also features a rooftop swimming pool and terrace with views out over the park.
If asked to stick my neck out K+K Hotel Picasso would be one of the two 4 Star El Born Hotels where I'd choose to stay myself.
Via Laietana, 3, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona
Set in a colonial, stone building with a clock tower on Via Laietana, the main road down to the port, Barcelona Hotel Colonial is perfectly located for both El Born and the Barri Gòtic.
I find the building itself particularly impressive and the 82 bright, air-conditioned soundproofed rooms feature wooden floors and a flat-screen TV and minibar and the private bathroom comes with a hairdryer and amenities.
A buffet breakfast is served in the Colonial Hotel café and guests can relax with a free newspaper in the stylish lounge, with its white leather sofas.
In comparison with the other hotel locations listed on this page, I find Via Laietana a little busy but this hotel is perfectly situated for El Born, Port Vell, El Gòtic and La Rambla.
Bòria, 24-26, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona
Located on Carrer de la Bòria in the Santa Caterina neighbourhood, Mercer Boria Bcn is just a few minutes walk from from both El Born and the Barri Gòtic.
This happens to be one of my favourite streets in the whole wide world so I can only say great things about the funky authentic location.
If you add the fact that this chic boutique hotel is set in an 18th century building with only 11 suites, you are definitely in for an exclusive experience.
The interior design is clean and contemporary and each of the exclusive rooms is complemented with modern paintings by young upcoming local artists.
I have to say that Mercer Boria Bcn looks the bees knees to me and is the second of the hotels listed where I would definitely choose to stay myself.
Rec Comtal, 16-18, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona
Set in a 19th-century building in the lovely Sant Pere neighbourhood, Catalonia Born is about 5 minutes walk from El Born itself.
The 90 classic rooms at Catalonia Born Hotel include air conditioning and satellite TV and an elegant marble bathroom.
A buffet breakfast is served downstairs, the snack bar is open for lunch and dinner and there is also a pleasant bar in the lobby.
Catalonia Born features a rooftop pool as well as a lovely interior patio and guests can use the spa at the sister hotel, Catalonia Ramblas, a short walk away.
I recently picked up a tour group, who were staying here, and not only were they very happy with the hotel, but I also found the reception staff to be extremely polite and helpful.
