Given the city's beautiful architecture, it's not surprising that there are plenty of Barcelona luxury hotels to choose from.
So let's take a look at the real creme de la creme of 5 Star Hotels in Barcelona.
The truth is that we're not just talking about luxury hotels in Barcelona but rather Great Luxury Hotels.
This article provides an overview of all the Barcelona hotels that have the letters G.L. in their name.
GL stands for Gran Luxe in Catalan, Gran Lujo in Spanish and means Great Luxury in English, by the way.
That means they all tend to be 5 Star Hotels and some, and a few even have the word Monumento in their title, which generally means the building is also a recognised National Monument.
None of these luxury Barcelona hotels can be discrebided as cheap or even reasonably priced, but obviously get what you pay for!
Given that without exception they are all superb, I think location will be the major consideration when you decide whether or not to book a room.
Although I'm sure that aspects such as the building and atmosphere will also contribute.
Passeig de Gracia, 68, Eixample, 08007 Barcelona
Located on the corner of Passeig de Gràcia and Carrer Valencia, the Majestic Hotel & Spa Barcelona GL is opposite the famous Manzana de la Discordia, down the road from the La Pedrera and just round the corner from the Fundació Antoni Tàpies.
What's more Plaça de Catalunya and La Rambla are just a few minutes walk away.
The hotel originally opened in 1918 as the Hotel Majestic Inglaterra and given its marvellous location has been a first choice for the rich and famous ever since.
The Majestic offers 275 rooms, suites and penthouses of various categories equipped with air conditioning, flat screen TV, in-room safe and 24-hour room service.
Wireless high speed internet is available throughout the building and
9 modular meeting rooms, a dedicated multilingual event concierge and a
fully equipped business centre, the Majestic is ideal as a business
The Restaurant Salón Drolma offers Mediterranean cuisine, ideal for lunch meetings and snacks are available all day at the Bar.
There is a piano bar in the evening and, as the picture shows, the lounge bar on the rooftop every evening in the summer offers spectacular panoramic views of Barcelona and an outdoor swimming pool.
Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, 668, Eixample, 08010 Barcelona
Formerly the Ritz, the Hotel El Palace GL is absolutely gorgeous and is probably where I'd choose to stay if I didn't live round the corner.
Totally refurbished in 2009, El Palace Hotel first opened in 1919 has been a Barcelona icon for nearly a century and the renovations have conserved its classical class and style.
Set on Gran Via just a short walk from main attractions, such as the Barri Gòtic and La Rambla, it is also perfectly for the boutiques and modernista architecture of Passeig de Gràcia and the Dreta de l'Eixample.
The hotel offers 125 sumptuously decorated rooms including 42 Suites and Junior Suites, which along with the public areas and lounges ooze an opulent 1920s atmosphere.
With a Michelin Star, El Palace's Caelis Restaurant offers top-notch
cuisine and the 19/NINETEEN Restaurant located at the Hall of the hotel
and the emblematic cocktail bar Rien de Rien are also first class.
On the premises you will also find a Mayan Luxury Spa and Fitness Room with a unique spa with a Temazcal Sauna, which is apparently exclusive in Europe.
However, as far as I'm concerned it's the setting and style of the place that really win me over and for this reason, if I had the money, the Palace would definitely be amongst my first choices of places to stay in Barcelona.
Moll de Barcelona WTC, Ciutat Vella, 08039 Barcelona
Located in the World Trade Centre complex overlooking the Port Vell with La Barceloneta in the distance and just a couple of minutes walk away from the bottom of La Rambla, the Eurostars Grand Marina really is in a prime location.

Resembling a transatlantic liner, the hotel has a total of 291 rooms, which all look out onto the sea
The impressive circular staircase in the main hall was designed by the architect, Leohming Pei, creator of the pyramid that forms the main entrance to the Louvre Museum in Paris so it's no surprise the Grand Marina oozes cutting edge design and houses temporary, avant-garde art exhibitions.
The Grand Marina also has 31 meeting rooms of varying sizes and shapes with its Eurostars Grand Marina Photography Prize and Eurostars Travel Narrative Award plays an important role in the cultural life of the city.
Passeig de Gracia, 132, Gràcia, 08008 Barcelona
The use of the word monumento in this hotel's name is certainly not in vain as Casa Fuster is a major Barcelona monument and UNESCO World Heritage site by the Modernista architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner and it's facade is breathtaking.
The Thursday night jazz concerts at the Café Vienna downstairs have become a highlight of the Barcelona music scene and the café has a fascinating history as a meeting point for artists and intellectuals.
The location at the top of Passeig de Gràcia next to the park known as the Jardinets means that you are perfectly situated for the bars and cafés of trendy and progressive Vila de Gràcia whilst also being right on the edge of the sights and shopping of the Eixample.
The rooftop terrace with pool has been magnificent views of Passeig
de Gràcia all the way to the Mediterranean sea, up to Tibidabo and
across to La Sagrada Familia.
The well-regarded Galaxo restaurant is located on the first floor of Hotel Casa Fuster and serves Mediterranean food featuring fresh local seasonal products.
The 96 elegant air-conditioned rooms at Casa Fuster G.L Monumento feature satellite TV, a minibar and a private bathroom with a hairdryer, bathrobe and slippers and ome rooms have a hydro-massage bath.
Pau Claris, 150, Eixample, 08009 Barcelona
Extremely well-situated just two streets off Passeig de Gràcia on Pau Claris between Carrer Mallorca and Carrer Valencia, Hotel Claris G.L. is right in the heart of the area of the Dreta de l'Eixample known as the Quadrat d'Or - the Golden Square, where the highest density of fine modernista buildings is to be found.
What's more if you are looking for a slightly more authentic Barcelona experience, you're also in a perfect spot, as a couple of streets away from Hotel Claris you have a living neighbourhood centred around the Mercat de la Concepció, which has some absolutely fantastic restaurants and bars frequented by locals rather than tourists.
The building itself is also worthy of note as the Claris is housed in the Palau Vedruna, an early 20th century palace that was converted into a hotel in 1992.
With 124 newly-renovated rooms and exclusive suites, all of which
include an interesting work of art from the hotel's extensive
collection, the Hotel Claris offers luxury accommodation combining
modern furnishings with a classic feel.
Not only does the Claris have its own museum showcasing Egyptian art but also features an outdoor swimming pool, solarium, gym and sauna as well as meeting rooms for business guests.
The hotel’s Terraza del Claris Restaurant serves gourmet Mediterranean food on the spectacular roof terrace offering panoramic views of the Barcelona skyline and there is also an excellent tapas bar serving snacks and drinks.
Avinguda Tibidabo, 1, Sarrià-St. Gervasi, 08022 Barcelona
Situated up on Avinguda Tibidabo overlooking the city, ABaC Restaurant Hotel is in Sarrià-Sant Gervasi, one of the city's most luxurious neighbourhoods and definitely uptown Barcelona.
You'll need to take a taxi or nearby public transport to see Barcelona's most famous sights but from here you get an incredibly privileged view of the city and staying at the ABaC is a truly exclusive experience.
This is not surprising because the hotel only offers 15 stylish contemporary rooms, all of which are sounproofed and fitted with state of the art equipment.
However, the ABaC's real claim to fame is its magnificent restaurant under star chef Jordi Cruz, who is not only at the cutting edge of creative Catalan cuisine but has also become a celebrity following the recent success of the Masterchef television programme.
Founded in El Born in 2000, the ABaC restaurant moved to its current
location in 2008 and boasts 2 Michelin stars and a whole array of
The restaurant itself is a lovely space looking out onto the garden and separate rooms are available for private functions.
It's well-worth taking up the offer of a visit to the kitchens and with a choice of over 900 wines, the bodega really is something else.
There is also a very cool Lounge Bar with interesting lighting effects as well as a very special two-cabin sauna.
