I would have expected there to be a large number of Barceloneta Beach Hotels but, although there is a much better choice of hostels and apartment rentals, there are actually only three.
Of these, by far the most famous and luxurious is the iconic W Hotel right at the end of La Barceloneta.
With its own man-made beach and truly spectaculr views, it really does take some beating.
Although also in the 5 Star category, the Pullman Skipper next the Port Olímpic is right at the opposite end of La Barceloneta in the shadow of the Hotel Arts Barcelona.
It is an excellent hotel but cannot really compete with Hotel W in terms of luxury and exclusiveness and this is shown in the price.
Given that it is only 3 Star it may be surprising but I am completely wowed by Hotel 54.
It is a design hotel housed in an old building and it is the only one of the three that is located right in the centre of La Barceloneta.
This old fishing district is set between the beach and the port and, surrounded by great restaurants and bars, it has retained its funky charm.
It strikes me that there is a gap in the market for more reasonably priced hotels, which cater for guests seeking a little more comfort than a hostel but not as much luxury as a 5 Star hotel.
Plaça Rosa dels Vents, 1 - Passeig Joan de Borbó, Ciutat Vella, 08039 Barcelona
The most luxurious of Barceloneta beach hotels, W Barcelona is a striking sail-like 26 storey structure designed by Ricardo Bofill that has become an integral part of the Barcelona skyline since it opened in 2009.
Located at Plaça de la Rosa del Vents at the far end of Sant Sebastià Beach, it offers breathtaking hi-tech design, fantastic views out to the Mediterranean and over Barcelona and is the only hotel in Barcelona with beachfront access.
With 273 rooms and suites, W Hotel really is a superb place to stay and the expansive rooms equipped with signature W beds and state of the art audio-visual equipment also offer 360º degree views of the city anf the sea.
W Hotel has all the luxuries including spas and swish bars such as the rooftop Eclipse or the W Bar and swimmers and sunseekers can choose between the man-made beach or the spectacular rooftop pool.
The Bravo24 restaurant under chef Carlos Abellan quickly gained its first Michelin star with its combination of vanguard cuisine, traditional tapas and homemade food.
My only critism of the hotel that, in contradiction to the title of the article, it is a bit of a treck from the sights of the Barri Gòtic, which is a bit of an inconvenience if your main objective is sightseeing.
W Barcelona is 20 minutes’ walk from La Barceloneta Metro Station on the Yellow L4 Line, but buses stop outside the hotel and if you are staying at such an upmarket hotel, a taxi is probably within your budget.
W Hotel is definitely an extremely cool option so much so that before major games, the FC Barcelona team have got into the habit of spending the night there.
Avinguda Litoral, 10, 08005 Barcelona
The Pullman Barcelona Skipper also opened in 2009 and is located right at the opposite end at the limits of La Barceloneta next to Barcelona’s Olympic Port.
It is a great situation, though, just a few metres from Somorrostro Beach and the Passeig Marítim.
The Pullman Skipper has 241 spacious rooms and suites with luxury modern fittings, many of which have views out over the Mediterranean and in many parts of the hotel Frank Gehry's iconic fish sculpture is omnipresent.
There are two swimming pools and the Atic Bar next the rooftop pool,
with impressive views of the city and sea is a particularly pleasant
The Blend Lounge & Bar, at the heart of the building, is a lively bustling meeting place where you have a drink, taste some tapas or sit down to an a la carte meal.
The Pullman Barcelona Skipper is 5 minutes’ walk from Ciutadella Vila Olimpica Metro Station, with Barcelona Zoo and the lovely Ciutadella Park are also very nearby.
The Pullman Skipper looks like an excellent hotel but cannot really compete for the top end of the market with W Hotel or neighbouring Hotel Arts.
In my opinion, it is more of an upmarket 4 Star, and this is reflected in the prices, than an out and out 5 Star Hotel.
Passeig Joan de Borbó, 54, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona
If your budget doesn't quite run to 5 Stars and you don't want to slum it, SM Hotel 54 really is really is a brilliant option.
Located on busy Passeig Joan de Borbó on the port rather than the beach side of Barceloneta you get more of a feel for the old fishing quarter at Hotel 54 than at either of the posh 5 stars.
Because it is housed in an old Barceloneta building, the hotel's facade does not look particularly promising but the truth is the interior has been tastefully renovated and its claims to be a design hotel are more than justified.
The rooms at the SM Hotel 54 Barceloneta are nice enough with modern décor and innovative lighting and each has a private bathroom with a hairdryer.
One of the nicest features is the stylish terrace overlooking the port, where you can have a pleasant drink.
Hotel 54 has a bar and provides a buffet breakfast but does not have a full-blown restaurant.
However, this is certainly no disadvantage given its location on Passeig Joan de Borbó, which has the best selection of fish restaurants in town.
It is also well-worth exploring the bars and restaurants on the backstreets of the Barceloneta neighbourhood as well.
The 54 Barceloneta really is in a great location just 3 minutes’ walk from La Barceloneta Beach, you can stroll to the attractive Born district in 10 minutes and La Barceloneta Metro Station is a 7-minute walk away.
