Les Bullangues

Anti-Religious Riots across Catalonia from 1835 to 1843

The first wave of anti-religious riots, knowns as the Bullangues, began in July 1835 following the Burning of the Convents, when Barcelona liberals  decided to take advantage of the peoples' dissatisfaction in order to force the Spanish government to apply liberal reforms.

Fear of general repression provoked the first great Bullanga in Barcelona when General Bassa entered the city on August 5th 1835.

The general was murdered and monuments supporting Fernando VII, the symbol of absolutism, were demolished and a number of factories belonging to the bourgeoisie were burned down.
