1535 - Hayreddin Barbarossa (Red Beard) leads the sacking of Mahon on the island of Menorca.

1913 - Madrid: A Spanish government decree allowing a region to unite its diputations is passed and this serves as the legal basis for the creation of the Mancomunitat de Catalunya.

1979 - Catalonia: The Statute of Autonomy, known as the Estatut de Sau, becomes law when King Juan Carlos I approves the organic law of the Estatut d'Autonomia de Catalunya (Llei Orgànica 4/1979, 18th December).

1989 - The Assemblea Constituent de Catalunya Lliure, impulsed by PSAN, is held.


1840 - Arecibo, Puerto Rico: Josep Coll i Britapaja, composer, especially of sarsuelas.

1956 - Mataró, Maresme: Jordi Bosch i Palacios, Catalan actor.

1971 - Barcelona: Arantxa Sánchez Vicario, Catalan professional tennis player.

2004 - Barcelona: Josep Romeu i Figueras, Catalan poet and literary critic (born 1917).


2000 - Zarautz, Basque Country: Luis Claramunt, Catalan painter, illustrator and engraver.
