1902 - Barcelona: A general strike is declared and 100,000 workers participate.

1949 - Barcelona: The Francoist authorities execute PSUC members, Joaquim Puig i Pidemunt, Angel Carrero Sancho, Pere Valverde Fuentes and Numen Mestre Ferrando, by firing squad.

1987 - Barcelona: The rector of the UAB closes the university after students occupy the rectorate.

1993 - Catalonia: The Parliament of Catalonia declares Els Segadors to be the official national anthem of Catalonia.

Births

1741 - Torà, Bishopric of Solsona: Rafael Nuix, Jesuit theologian.

1947 - Sabadell: Xavier Vinader i Sánchez, Catalan journalist, expert on the extreme right and organised crime.

1973 - Taradell: Lluís Codina Codina, footballer who played for Gimnàstic de Tarragona amongst other teams.

1993 - Cervera, Segarra: Marc Márquez i Alenta, Catalan motorcycle champion.

Deaths

1901 - París (France): Carles Casagemas i Coll, Catalan painter and close friend of Picasso (born 1880).

1976 - Barcelona: Clementina Arderiu i Voltas, Catalan poet.
