February is a particularly interesting month in Catalonia. Here you will find the major historical events and festivals listed as well as birth and death anniversaries of important Catalans. 

The weather is still quite cold but the skies are often bright blue so February is a particularly lovely month to be in Catalonia.

Many of the sayings associated with February in Catalonia focus on either the cold weather or Carnival.

The one of chosen to illustrate the month combines the two ideas and is "Més tard o més matiner, Carnaval dins del Febrer" (Sooner or later, Carnaval happens in February.).


February 1st 1900 - Barcelona: The first exhibition by Pablo Ruiz Picasso is held at Els Quatre Gats organised by the group of artists led by Santiago Rusiñol and Ramon Casas.

February 5th 1919 - Barcelona: The Canadenca strike begins.

February 9th 1908 - Barcelona - Opening of the Palau de la Música Catalana, designed by modernista architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner.

February 21st 1919 - Barcelona: The Sindicat Únic d'Aigua, Gas i Electricitat of the CNT begins La Canadenca strike.

February 23rd 1923 - Barcelona: Albert Einstein gives three talks about his Theory of Relativity to the Diputació.

February 4th 1892 - el Vendrell, Província de Tarragona: Andreu Nin, Catalan politician and writer, who worked briefly as Trotsky's secretary and founded the POUM.

February 7th 1913 - Barcelona: Ramon Mercader, Catalan soldier and politician, best known as the assassin of Leon Trotsky.

February 9th 1884 - Barcelona: Josep Carner, Catalan writer.

February 20th 1868 - Gràcia, Barcelona Province: Pompeu Fabra, Catalan philologist, principal impulsor of the ortographic reform of 1913 (died 1948).


February 7th 1916 - Vic: Josep Torras i Bages, Catalan priest and writer.

February 14th 2016 - Barcelona: Muriel Casals i Couturier, Catalan economist and politician and as president of Òmnium Cultural, key figure in the Catalan independence process (born 1945).

February 17th 1901 - París (France): Carles Casagemas i Coll, Catalan painter and close friend of Picasso (born 1880).

February 19th 1899 - Cervelló: Josep Tarradellas i Joan, 125th President of the Generalitat of Catalonia.

February 21st 1911 - Barcelona (Barcelonès): Isidre Nonell i Monturiol, Catalan painter and illustrator (born 1872)

February 22nd 1726 - La Coruña, Galícia: Antoni de Villarroel, military defender of Barcelona during the siege of 1714 (69 years old).

February 22nd 1985 - Barcelona: Salvador Espriu, Catalan poet (71 years old).

February 24th 1874 - Barcelona, Barcelonès: Josep Anselm Clavé i Camps, Catalan musician and politician, founder of the Cors de Clavé.
