The Festa de la Fil.loxera in Sant Sadurni d'Anoia in the wine-producing comarca of L'Alt Penedès commemorates the self-styled Capital of Cava's survival from the Phylloxera aphid plague that hit Catalan grape growers in the late 19th century and destroyed all the vines.
In 2018, La Festa takes place on September 7th and 8th and is a great time to visit the town and some of its classic wineries as well as enjoy the fireworks and music.
The festival consists of three main events: the procession known as the escampada de fil·loxeretes around the streets of Sant Sadurni is on the evening of September 7th, and the Festa de la Fil•loxera infantil takes place at lunchtime on September and as the name suggests is specially for children.
The main event, though, is the Festa de la Fil•loxera itself, which is on the evening of September 8th, when the streets of Sant Sadurni are filled with music and fireworks.
The colour yellow dominates as giant aphids are symbolically destroyed and cava corks are popped.
