A highlight of late summer within reach of Barcelona is without doubt the Festa Major de Vilafranca del Penedès, which in 2016 is celebrated between Monday 28th August and Friday 1st September.
If you're in Barcelona, Vilafranca del Penedès is easy to get to as an hour so south of Barcelona on the Rodalies Local Train line and if you're anywhere else in Barcelona Province, the Alt Penedès town is easily reached by car.
The festival is centred around August 30th, which is the Saints' Day of Sant Fèlix, who is the patron saint of the town.
In 2016, Sant Fèlix falls on Tuesday and is the main day of the festa, when you have the big procession or Cercavila and also the Diada Castellera, where the fantastic Castellers de Vilafranca are joined by some of the the best collas in Catalonia.
If you don't know much about the Catalan Human Towers tradition, you can read all about Castells here.
There are plenty of other events throughout the week, including childrens' shows, concerts, popular meals and exhibitions.
You can consult the Full Programme on the Official Festa Major website.
