Hotel España

A Modernista Jewel just off La Rambla

Located in a 19th century building on Carrer de Sant Pau just off The Ramblas, the Four-Star Hotel España originally opened in 1850 and is a legendary Barcelona establishment due to its Modernista decorations, which were completed under the direction of Lluís Domènech i Montaner of Palau de la Música Catalana fame at the beginning of the 20th century.

The sculptor Eusebi Arnau and painter Ramon Casas worked alongside the great architect and following the hotel's restoration in 2010, the decorations, particularly the paintings in the restaurant and the fireplace downstairs, can be seen in all their glory.

The hotel is in an excellent location in El Raval just a short walk from the Barri Gòtic and a few metres from Liceu metro station.

The elegant rooms and suites vary from 18 m2 to 74 m2 in size and are stylishly decorated and have a flatscreen TV, air-conditioning and a large en suite bathroom.

In the morning, the hotel's Bar Arnau serves a buffet breakfast and throughout the day offers drinks, cocktails and snacks.

The España has a lovely rooftop top terrace with striking contemporary decorations, which is perfect in summer when it hosts live music and DJ sessions.

The restaurant on the terrace, Restaurante Terraza Alaire Ramblas, is run by the renowned chef Martin Berasategui, with seven Michelin stars to his name, and is a great place to combine challenging cuisine with live music.

However, even better known is the ground floor restaurant, Fonda España, also run by Berasategui, where you can dine in the presence of Ramon Casas' marvellous Modernista paintings.
