1931 - Mallorca: Homage by the Associació per a la Cultura de Mallorca to Miquel Costa i Llobera.

1939 - Tarragona: Tarragona is occupied by Nationalist troops during the Spanish Civil War.

1981 - Andorra: With the creation of the Andorran government, called the Consell Executiu, the separation of powers in the country begins and the process of reforms that would culminate in the drawing up of the Constitution, voted on in referendum on March 14th 1993.

1978 - Barcelona: The Scala fire kills 4 workers affiliated to the CNT. Members of the union are blamed. Anarchists claim the fire is the result of a government plot.


1874 - Barcelona: Fructuós Gelabert i Badiella, director, scriptwriter, camera operator and film producer.


1728 - Segòvia: Joan Baptista Basset i Ramos, Austriacist military leader who led the Valencian revolt against Felipe V ahead of the Maulets.

1729 - Palma: Mateu Reus Rotget, is executed.

1963 - Palma: Antoni Torrandell i Jaume, Mallorcan composer.

2005 - Barcelona: Victòria dels Àngels, opera singer, soprano.

Festivals and Commemorations

January 15th is the Saints' Day of Sant Pau Ermità, known as Saint Paul the First Hermit, Paul of Thebes or Paul the Anchorite, in Catalonia he is one of the Bearded Saints, celebrated in the Setmana dels Barbuts.
