1287 - King Alfons the Frank continues la conquest of the island of Menorca, which sulminates in the capitulation of Sent Agaiz, signed at the al castle of Santa Àgueda on January 21st.
1401 - Barcelona: The first exchange table covered by the insignia of city opens in La Llotja.
1479 - Fernando the Catholic accedes to the throne of Aragon.
1640 - Barcelona: The people welcome Francesc de Tamarit, hero of the Siege of Salses.
1924 - Espanya: Primo de Rivera makes well-known anti-Catalanists provincial deputies of Catalunya.
1927 - The two-day trial of Francesc Macià and members of Estat Català for the Events of Prats de Molló begins in Paris
1850 - Alcoi: Emili Sala i Francés, Valencian painter (died 1910).
1864 - Vic: Joan Collell i Cuatrecasas, Catalan priest (died 1921).
1896 - Felanitx: Joan Estelrich i Artigues, Mallorcan writer and politician.
1902 - Reus: Joan Garcia Oliver, anarchist member of the CNT and FAI and Minister of Justice in Largo Caballero's government in November 1936. He introduced equality legislation for men and women.
1952 - Barcelona: Joan Barril i Cuixart, Catalan writer and journalist (died 2014).
1479 - Barcelona: Joan the Faithless, King of the Crown of Aragon.
1934 - Sitges, Garraf: Miquel Utrillo, Catalan engineer, painter, interior designer, art critic and promoter (born 1862).
1963 - Barcelona: Joaquim Dualde i Gómez, Valencian lawyer and politician, Minister of Public Education and Fine Arts (1934-1935) during the Second Spanish Republic (87 years old).
1997 - Barcelona: Josep Trueta, Doctor Trueta, Catalan traumatologist (born 1897).
2014 - Montse Anfruns, Catalan actress, singer and poet specialising in audiovisual dubbing.
January 20th is the Saints' Day of Sant Sebastià was a Christian who was born in the Roman province of Narbonne around AD 256 and died in Rome around 288 and a great number of winter festivals are celebrated in his honour in Catalonia and the Catalan-speaking countries.
