The Font Màgica or Magic Fountain of Montjuïc is the largest ornamental fountain in Barcelona and one of the city's most popular attractions with its choreographed light show of water and music.
Located at the far end of Avinguda de Reina Maria Cristina, the Magic Fountain was designed the engineer Carles Buigas for the Barcelona Universal Exhibition of 1929 and was an immediate success.
It fell into disrepair over the following decades but was meticulously repaired and modernised, along with the rest of Montjuïc, in preparation for the 1992 Olympic Games.
The fountain is the scene of the spectacular "Piromusical" that closes Les Festes de la Mercè and is also the scene of occasional concerts, including the free opening concert of the Barcelona Jazz Festival and many other summer festivals.
With more than 50 variations, the regular music and coloured light show is spectacular enough and can be seen on Friday and Saturday in spring and autumn and from Thursday to Sunday in summer.
