Saints Day of La Mare de Déu del Roser

October 7th

October 7th is the Saints Day of La Mare de Déu del Roser, who is one of the many Madonna and child figures and acts as an excuse for Festa Majors around Catalonia.

The name in Catalan, roser, refers both to both to rose tree and also the rosary, which was very popular in medieval Catalonia, and wreaths of roses used to be offered in honour of the saint.

There is a particularly important sanctuary in Pompeii in the former Kingdom of Naples, which was ruled by the Counts of Barcelona under the Crown of Aragon, and in many parts of the world her saints' day is actually on May 8th.

The Saints Day of La Mare de Déu del Roser is celebrated in Catalonia on October 7th since 1571, when Pope Gregory XIII marked the day as a holiday in order to give thanks for the Catalan victory at the Battle of Lepanto against the Turks.
