In 2018, the Saints Day of La Mare de Déu dels Dolors, which is celebrated the Friday before Palm Sunday, is on March 23rd and there are processions in towns throughout Catalonia.
The Divendres dels Dolors, literally Friday of Pains, processions follow the steps or mysteries behind the pain that Mary suffered when she found out what was going to happen to her son.
The main figure in the processions is an image of Mary crying alone, known as La Dolorosa, and in the towns and villages without a Dolorosa a figure of Mary with the dead body of Jesus in her arms is carried, even though according to the liturgy he hadn't been crucified yet.
In Catalonia, the cult of La Mare de Déu dels Dolors dates back to the 11th century, although its most splendrous moment was reached as the influence of the Franciscans expanded in the 15th century.
Legend has it that it always rains either on Divendres dels Dolors (or the day before or the day after) in honour of Mary's tears.
