1808 - València: A revolt breaks out against French occupation (Peninsular War).

1896 - La Direcció General de Correus i Telègrafs prohibits speaking Catalan on the telephone. A week later the order is revoked.

1981 - Barcelona: An assault on the Banco Central in Barcelona city centre lasts 37 hours.

2016 - Vila de Gràcia: The eviction of the squatters of the Banc Expropiat ends with violence between demonstrators and the Mossos d'Esquadra.


1843 - Girona: Joaquim Vayreda i Vila, Catalan painter (died 1894).

1923 - Barcelona: Alícia de Larrocha, Catalan pianist (died 2009).

1925 - Palma: Josep Maria Llompart de la Peña, Mallorcan poet, essayist, cultural activist, literary critic, publisher and translator.

1930 - Mollet del Vallès: Jordi Solé i Tura, Catalan lawyer and politician (died 2009).

1948 - Terrassa: Àngels Poch i Comas, Catalan actress.


1423 - Peníscola: Antipope Benedict XIII (Papa Luna), cardinal and pope of Avignon.

2004 - Barcelona: Ramon Margalef, Catalan ecologist.

2014 - Barcelona: Miquel Caminal i Badia, Catalan political scientist.

2016 - Ibi: Álvaro de Tibi, Valencian schoolteacher and jai alai player.
