Along with the University and the Hospital Clinic, the Mercat del Ninot is one of the main buildings of L'Antiga Esquerra de l'Eixample and in many respects it forms the heart of the neighbourhood.
El Ninot originally opened as an open air market in 1892 with the official name of El Mercat del Porvenir, which never stuck.
The market was covered with the current iron, brick and glass structure in 1933 and in 2015 reopened after a complete refurbishment.
There are currently 81 stalls in the interior, which like all Barcelona Markets sell a wide variety of foodstuffs, including fish, meat, vegetables and conserves.
There are also bars, an underground car park and a Mercadona supermarket so you can do all your shopping in one place.
Another nice feature is the exterior market, which sells clothes and other items and has slightly shorter opening hours.
