Mireia Belmonte

Badalona-born World Champion Swimmer

Mireia Belmonte is a Catalan swimmer, who is world record breaker at various freestyle and medley events and is also a championship-winning butterfly swimmer.

Mireia Belmonte i García was born in Badalona on November 10th 1990, where she began swimming with Club Natació Badalona at the age of four.

In 2003, she obtained a scholarship to the elite sports training centre, the Centre d'Alt Rendiment (CAR) in Sant Cugat del Vallès, from where she first signed for  first Club Natació l'Hospitalet, then Club Natació Sabadell, and since 2013, she swims for UCAM de Múrcia.

At the time of writing, Mireia Belmonte is world record holder in various disciplines and has participated in three Olympic Games: Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016.

She has won a gold medal in the 200 metres butterfly, and two silver medals, one the 200 metres butterfly one in the 800 metres freestyle.

Mireia Belmonte was recently made an honorary citizen of her hometown of Badalona.
