1492 - San Salvador, currently Watling (The Bahamas): Christopher Columbus arrives at the island of San Salvador and Europeans officially "discover" America. For this reason, October 12th is El Dia de la Hispanitat, Spain's National Festival, and Columbus Day in the United States.

1707 - The Borbón troops enter Lleida for the first time during the War of the Spanish Succession. 700 people were killed.

- Sepang (Malàisia): Dani Pedrosa becomes world motorcycle champion in the 125 cc category.


1812 - Sabadell: Feliu Vilarrúbias i Busquets, lawyer and mayor of Sabadell.
1908 - Ponts, Noguera: Josep Comabella i Rabassa, Catalan journalist and politician.
1970 - La Garriga, Vallès Oriental: Toni Jiménez, goalkeeper.


1949 - Barcelona: Francesca Bonnemaison. pedagogue and promotor of popular women's education; creator of the Biblioteca Popular de la Dona in 1909 (born 1872).
1981 - Sant Cugat del Vallès: Antoni Romañà i Pujó, matemàtic i astrònom català, jesuïta, impulsor de l'Observatori de l'Ebre (born 1900).
