1147 - Almeria: Ramon Berenguer IV helps the Genoese to take the city from the Saracens with the Catalan fleet.
1822 - Castellfollit de Riubregós (Anoia): The liberal troops, commanded by Francisco Espoz y Mina, besiege the town, occupied by royalists, and end up destroying the town.
1906 - Barcelona: Closure of the Primer Congrés de Llengua Catalana.
1986 - Lausanne (Switzerland): The city of Barcelona is designated host of the XXV Olympic Games, to be celebrated in 1992.
2004 - Phillip Island (Victoria State, Australia): Dani Pedrosa becomes motorcycle world champion in the 250 cc category.


1867 - Mataró: Josep Puig i Cadafalch, architect, art historian and politician. One of the most important architects of the Modernista movement and President of the Mancomunitat of Catalonia 1917-24


1575 - Tarragona: Gaspar Cervantes de Gaeta, archbishop of Tarragona and cardinal (born 1511).
1793 - València: Francesc Morera i Cots, Valencian baroque composer (born 1731).
2003 - Bangkok (Thailand): Manuel Vázquez Montalbán, Catalan writer in the Spanish language (born 1939).
