Although the Plaça Reial Accommodation offer includes the magnificent 5 Star Hotel DO, the majority of the options are still aimed at the budget traveller and include cheaps hotels, hostels and apartment rentals.
Plaça Reial's location just off La Rambla in the heart of Barcelona City Centre makes it a great place to stay whatever your budget.
With so many great bars and restaurants nearby finding first class food and drink will certainly be no problem, and you're also in easy walking distance for both the sights of the Barri Gòtic and the more honky-tonk delights of El Raval.
Speaking personally, I'm most convinced by the Plaça Reial Accommodation at the cheaper end of the price range, and if I had to stick my neck out would probably go for the moderately priced Hotel Fornos or if I was visiting with a group of friends would definitely take a look at the Vidre Home apartments on Carrer del Vidre.
Despite its recent gentrification, Plaça Reial still conjures up a cheap and cheerful image in my mind, at least.
I've included hotels and hostels on Carrer Colom and Carrer dels Vidres, by the way ... although Plaça Reial isn't in the address, this can definitely be described as Plaça Reial Accommodation because they're so close!
As you can see from the map below, Plaça Reial is very close to Liceu metro station, which is on the Green L3 Metro Line and will get you pretty much wherever you want to be in the city in 15 minutes or so.
Plaça Reial, 1, Ciutat Vella, 08001 Barcelona
The opening of Hotel DO in Plaça Reial in 2011 was in many respects the culmination of the gentrification process of this magnificent 19th century square.
Hotel DO Plaça Reial features a spa, a rooftop pool and stylish rooms and its 5 Star status is definitely not oriented towards the budget traveller. Each spacious, air-conditioned room has striking, modern décor with free Wi-Fi, a Loewe flat-screen TV and a free minibar.
In the mornings, the DO Plaça Reial offers an à la carte breakfast which features homemade bread and local, organic jams and cheeses and on-site chefs can also prepare cooked dishes.
Creative Mediterranean cuisine and tapas dishes are served in the DO Plaça Reial’s 3 restaurants - La Cuina, La Terrassa and El Terrat.
The hotel spa features a sauna and a steam room and Hotel DO guests receive an hour’s free access.
Plaça Reial, 17, Ciutat Vella. 08002 Barcelona
Right at the other end of the price scale is the Kabul Backpackers Hostel, which is something of a Barcelona budget travellers' classic and shows that Plaça Reial has lost none of its funky charm.
This lively hostel offers air-conditioned dormitories, a sun terrace and 24-hour reception and access to 20 minutes of free daily Wi-Fi in the lounge.
Each bright dorm at Kabul Backpackers has wooden floors and offers large individual lockers with magnetic keys. Guests have access to shared bathrooms, and sheets can be rented from reception.
The Kabul’s bar serves a free breakfast buffet and the common room includes a pool table, satellite TV and vending machines.
I really love the location right next door to one of the city's cooles jazz and dance clubs, Jamboree.
Plaça Reial, 11, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona
Located in the corner of Plaça Reial, Roma Reial Hotel's 52 rooms offer simple and functional accommodation with great views of the square so you have the advantage of an excellent location at a very reasonable price.
The hotel's very pleasant restaurant features original stone archways and has an outdoor terrace from where you can enjoy the lively atmosphere of Plaça Reial.
The rooms at Roma Reial can accommodate up to four people and feature classic décor and include a TV and a private bathroom.
There is also free Wi-Fi throughout the premises and the staff are noted for their friendly service.
Carrer del Vidre, 7, 1-1, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona
Vidre Home is located on Carrer del Vidre right next to Plaça Real and offers modern, air-conditioned accommodation with a private balcony and free Wi-Fi.
The modern rooms at Vidre Home - Plaza Real feature parquet floors and simple furniture with access to a shared kitchen with a dishwasher and hob. The Vidre Home apartments have 2 balconies, as well as a kitchen with an oven, hob and dishwasher and there is also a hairdryer in the bathrooms.
Obviously, the great advantage of booking a self-catering apartment is that you can enjoy the delights of Barcelona City Centre whilst also being able to save on eating out.
This makes Vidre Home an excellent option in my opinion.
La Rambla, 44 - Carrer Colom, 2, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona
The main entrance to Hotel Fornos is on Carrer Colom, the small street that runs between Plaça Reial and the central section of The Ramblas, known as La Rambla dels Caputxins, so the location is unbeatable.
Free Wi-Fi, 24-hour reception and functional, air-conditioned rooms with flat-screen satellite TV are offered at this well-located and reasonably priced hotel. Each room has a private bathroom and a safe and most also have a small balcony with views of the Ramblas or Plaça Real.
A light continental breakfast is offered at the hotel in the communal dining area and drinks and snacks are also available from the vending machines.
Much like Kabul Backpackers, Hotel Fornos is a Plaça Reial classic and I find it heartwarming that this kind of no nonsense budget accommodation is still available right in the heart of Barcelona city centre.
Plaça Reial 2, Ciutat Vella, 08001 Barcelona
Located between the upmarket Hotel DO and the brilliantly iconic Bar Glaciar, Pension Villanueva offers great value accommodation in one of the best spots in town.
The main disadvantage is that the pension is housed in a five-storey building with no lift so you definitely need to be young and fit if you're planning on staying here.
The Pension Villanueva offers 28 functional and comfortable rooms, some of which are en suite, with a small shower. All of the rooms have Wi-Fi, air conditioning and heating and the wooden floors definitely add a warm touch to the atmosphere.
If you are travelling on a budget, cheaper accommodation options are available in rooms which share a bathroom.
Guests will find a coffee machine in reception and there's a great choice of bars and restaurants very close by so finding a decent place to eat out is no problem.
