Raul Romeva on BBC Hardtalk

September 9th 2015

Stephen Sackur talks to Raul Romeva, number 1 in the Junts pel Sí (Together for Yes) candidacy as the people of Catalonia are about to vote in a local autonomous election on September 27th, which has become a de facto poll on independence.

Sackur challenges Romeva on a number of issues, such as European challenges, Parochial nature of Catalan push for independence, Doubts whether Catalonia will remain in Europe, Unfairness of converting an election into a plebiscite, Broad nature of Junts pel Sí coalition, Lack of solidarity with the rest of Spain etc.

Romeva's central point is that a future cooperation between Catalonia and Spain is better for the EU than the current conflict.

He also points out that currently, he and all Catalan citizens are Catalan, Spanish and European and that it isn't feasible for the EU to expel 7.5 million Catalans if Catalonia became independent.

He emphasises that as EU citizens, Catalans have the right to be listened to.

Romeva closes the interview by pointing out that everyone talks about the costs of leaving Spain but the costs of Catalonia staying in Spain would be much greater in the long-term.
