Located in the neighbourhood of Camp d'en Grassot i Gràcia Nova in the District of Gràcia, Sala Beckett is one of the most highly respected centres for modern and experimental theatre in Barcelona.
The theatre opened in 1989 as centre of operation for the Teatro Fronterizo company, directed by José Sanchis Sinisterra, and since then the group has focused on works by playwrights such as Samuel Beckett (after whom the theatre is named), David Mamet, Lluïsa Cunillé, Harold Pinter, Josep Maria Benet i Jornet, Sergi Pompermaier, Tom Stoppard or David Plana.
In 2005, the theatre received the Premi Nacional de Teatre from the Generalitat of Catalonia for its support for Catalan authors and in 2011, the Obrador Internacional de Dramatúrgia was created as an international foundation for contemporary theatre.
The theatre itself is a lovely intimate space with a small bar and seating for 89 spectators.
