Located on Avinguda Diagonal between Plaça Francesc Macià and Maria Cristina the neighbourhood of Les Corts, Sala Bikini first opened as a dancehall with outdoor terrace and minigolf in 1953 and is named after a popular local sandwich.
When I arrived in Barcelona in 1988, Bikini was the hottest club in town and due to the competition, and its slightly inconvenient location, has lost some of its muscle in recent decades.
However, the venue still programmes a great roster of gigs of a great variety of musical styles and the different areas offer diverse sounds, from techno to pop to indie, when the gig is over.
The club is now owned by the same promotors as other Barcelona classics, Sutton, Nick Havanna, New Casanova and La Carpa Barcelona, so Bikini looks like being part of a renaissance of upmarket Barcelona clubbing.
