According to legend, Anastasi was born into a pagan family in Lleida (Roman Ilerda) in around 263 AD and after joining the Roman legions, became a member of Diocletian's personal guard.
He converted to Christianity and was forced to flee to Badalona (Roman Baetulo) along with 73 co-religionists, where he was martyred.
There is some doubt about whether whether Sant Anastasi existed or and many think he may be based on Anastasi of Persia.
However, since 1627 he has been patron saint of Lleida and since 1672 he has been co-patron saint of Badalona and both towns hold festivals his honour.
May 11th is the Saints' Day of Sant Anastasi of Lleida, where he was born, or Badalona, where he died, and is an excuse for festivals in both towns, especially in Lleida where it is the Festa Major.
