October 16th is the Saints Day of Sant Galderic, who is the patron saint of Catalan farmers, and an excuse for autumn festivals in the countryside throughout Catalonia and the Catalan countries.
Sant Galderic was born in Vilavella, currently Sant Galderic, in Carcassonne around 820 and died in Sant Martí del Canigó in Conflent in 900 and is venerated as a saint by the Catholic church.
Galderic was a farmer, who with his two brothers, farmed the lands of a noble and fought for the rights of peasants against the abuses of landowners.
He was canonised in Narbonne by Raimon II, Bishop of Toulouse, in 990.
