Saints' Day of Sant Isidre

May 15th

May 11th is the Saints' Day of Sant Isidre the Labourer, who is the patron saint of farmers throughout Spain and his festival is celebrated in a number of towns in Catalonia, where to some extent he has substituted the local saints Abdó and Senen and Sant Galderic.

Isidre in Catalan was born Isidro de Merlo y Quintana in 1080 in what is now Madrid and when the Muslim Almoravid dynasty conquered the area was forced to flee to nearby Torrelaguna, where he married Maria Toribia, who was later canonised by as Saint Maria de la Cabeza.

Among the miracles attributed to him are making the water rise in order to save a child at the bottom of a well and also the story of angels tending his cows while he went to pray.

Sant Isidre was beatified by Pope Paul IV in 1619 and canonised by Gregory XV in 1622.
