Saints' Day of Sant Joan de Déu

March 8th

March 8th is the Saints' Day of Sant Joan de Déu was a Portuguese priest who founded the Order of the Brothers Hospitallers of Saint John of God and in Catalonia is the patron saint of firefighters.

He was born João Cidade Duarte in Montemor-o-Novo in Portugal on March 8th 1495 and moved to Spain as a child, where the at the age of 27 he joined the army of Carlos I and fought against the troops of Suleiman the Magnificent in the Siege of Vienna.

After time in Africa and Gibraltar, he arrived in Granada, where after hearing a sermon by John of Àvila he decided to dedicate his life to God and began begging in the street.

This led him to being hospitalised, where he gained an understanding of the plight of beggars and the ill, so on leaving he began raising funds and managed to open a hospital.

After he had opened more hospitals his fame began to grow and he became known as Juan de Dios or John of God and some of his disciples founded the Order of the Brothers Hospitallers of Saint John of God.

He died in Granada in Spain on March 9th 1550 and was canonised by Pope Urban VIII in 1630.
