Saints Day of Sant Narcís, Patron Saint of Girona

October 29th

October 29th is the Saints Day of Sant Narcís, who was Bishop of Girona and is now patron saint of the city and the Festa Major is celebrated in his honour.

According to legend Sant Narcís was Bishop of Girona but there is some doubt concerning the veracity of his existence and it has been suggested that he is based on Sant Narcís of Jerusalem, who is mentioned in the Martirologi d’Adó written in 858.

THe first mention of Sant Narcís of Girona was in a papal bull sent to Girona by Pope Silvester II in 1002 and he is mentioned again in a sermon by Abbot Oliba given when he was Bishop of Girona between 1018 and 1046.

His importance to Girona dates to 1285 when the French were attacking the the city and broke into the church of Sant Fèlix where they smashed the tomb of Sant Narcís.

Flies came out of the tomb and, without touching the Girona troops, began attacking the French, who fled. By the end of the day, the flies had bitten and killed 4,000 horses and 10,000 French soldiers.

Ever loyal to the people of Girona, Sant Narcís repeated the miracle, when the French laid siege to the city again in 1653 and 1808.
