Saints' Day of Sant Tomàs

December 21st

December 21st is the Saints Day of Sant Tomàs and as it is just before Christmas is an excuse for fairs, often centred on poultry, around Catalonia and the Catalan-speaking countries.

According to the New Testament, Tomàs or Thomas was one of the 12 Apostles and was in Palestine in the first century BC and died in Mylapore in India in 72 AD.

His real name was Judas and he had a twin brother so he was known as Judas the Twin, which Aramaic is Yəhudà Te'oma from where we get the name Thomas.

Tomàs is best known for the moment when the resurrected Jesus appears before him after the Crucifiction and invites him to put his finger in his wound to prove that he is real.

In later life, Tomàs preached Christianity in Syria, China and India, where he was apparently executed on July 3rd 72 AD on a hill in Mylapore, which is now known as Saint Thomas' Mount.

He is the patron saint of India and architects and his saints' day is now officialy July 3rd but until 1955 it was December 21st and for this reason the festivals in honour of Sant Tomàs are still celebrated on this day in Catalonia.
