August 9th is the Saints Day of Sant Zenon, who is the patron saint of Arenys de Mar, which holds its Festa Major around this day in his honour.
Relatively little is known about Zenon but it is reported that he and his companions were martyred during the reign of Diocletian in Rome at Acquae Salviae, where Saint Paul Tarsus was martyred.
The story goes that Zenon was put to death along with 10,203 companions after building the Baths of Diocletian but experts suggest that this is a misreading "X[risti] M[ilitum] CCIII", which would mean the actual number was 203.
Sant Zenon has been patron saint of Arenys de Mar since 1584 when an Italian priest from Sigüenza arrived in the town carrying his relics, which have been housed in the church of Santa Maria d'Arenys ever since.
