Saints' Day of Santa Bàrbara, Patron Saint of Miners

December 4th

December 4th is the Saints' Day of Santa Bàrbara and, although winter is upon us, it is still an excuse for Festa Majors around Catalonia and the Catalan-speaking countries.

Santa Bàrbara is a saint and martyr, who is venerated throughout the Christian world.

According to legend she was born in Nicodemia sometime in the 3rd century and died on December 4th 306 during the reign of Maximian but there is no real evidence that she ever existed not even in the writings of the first saint, Jerome.

Her cult began in the 7th century and as a result of doubts about her existence she was removed from the Catholic calendar in 1969

However, Santa Bàrbara is still venerated where her cult is traditional and she is the patron saint of miners and gunners and is invoked to guard against lightning and sudden death.

Given that so many towns have Santa Bàrbara in Catalonia, her saints day is celebrated in many places.
