1931 - Madrid, Spain: The Council of Ministers approved the cession of the Castle of Bellver and the surrounding woodland to the Ajuntament de Palma in Mallorca.


1854 - València: Lluís Tramoyeres i Blasco, Valencian art historian (died 1920).

1913 - Barcelona: Mary Santpere, versatile Catalan actress.

1915 - Palma: Pere Quetglas i Ferrer Xam, Mallorcan cultural promotor, educator and artist (died 2001).

1923 - Sabadell: Oriol Casassas i Simó, Catalan pediatrician.


1010 - Caliphate of Cordoba: Aeci, Bishop of Barcelona, killed during a Catalan military offensive against Cordoba.

1884 - Sabadell: Feliu Vilarrúbias i Busquets, lawyer and mayor of Sabadell.

1970 - Eduard Fontserè i Riba, Catalan meteorologist, seismologist and astronomer.

1985 - Barcelona: Agustí Centelles, photographer. (born 1909).

1993 - Barcelona: Adolf Cabané i Pibernat, Catalan musician who composed the anthem of Centre d'Esports Sabadell and of Futbol Club Barcelona (official from 1957 to 1974).

2005 - Sant Tropez, France: Antoni Clavé i Sanmartí, Catalan artist.

Festivals and Commemorations

September 1st is the Saints Day of Sant Gil, and as it is still summer, an excuse for Festa Majors around Catalonia and the Catalan-speaking countries.
